Roast 3rd man up Ruck rule 2020, a test of AFL Rules Committee's logic and reasoning

Its been a couple of years now that the AFL has banned the 3rd man up ruck rule, but the nominating a ruck rule is a joke and has cost teams goals. Everybody in the football world except for the AFL rules committee can see that nominating a ruck is completely unnecessary and slows the game down. Theres also been confusion where the umpire doesnt see a player nominate for the ruck, and locks out 1 team from contesting!!! Its a joke.

The simple alternative is throw the ball up/throw in from boundary ump and if 2 men from the same team contest, pay a freekick against that team. Speeds up the game and doesnt have this ridiiculous situation where a team cant contest.

The solution is so obvious and demands to be changed for Season 2020, that if the AFL Rules Committee doesnt implement the alternative they are basically incompetent and too stupid to be in their role.

Wow, so true. So simple. The ruck nominating slows the game down so much and is an absolutely abysmal rule. If they are so intent on not having 3rd man up, exactly, just throw it up and if someone does it, free kick. Or just bring back third man up which wasn't a big problem anyway.

They often actually wait for the ruckmen to get to the contest before balling it up, which slows down play and allows defence to set up. The rule is a bloody joke and needs to be fixed.

There was merit in bringing it in the first place because ruckmen were starting to become obsolete. But now with 6-6-6, and what players like grundy and gawn have brought to the game, the rule now can be removed. Quotes from the AFL article from when the rule was introduced explain the reasoning at the time.

"The AFL is understood to have been concerned that if it continued to allow players the ability to go 'third man up' the role of the ruckman would be under threat".

AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said it was important a change was made to protect one of the game's unique features.

"Eliminating the 'third man up' at ruck contests will support the recruitment of tall players and ensure our game continues to be played at the elite level by players of various sizes and differing abilities," Evans said
