I really want to see Durham claim the other wing. He seems to be able to get up and down the ground quicker. Needs to build his bodyand to really polish his skills, although he has shown glimpses. His game against Sydney was probably a good reflection; brilliance one moment, clanger the next. He's daring and dynamic compared with Langford though, who feels like a very safe and conservative kind of player.

Langford would be one of our best kicks going I50 and for goal, I don't think he's safe and conservative as much as he's trying to spot up the best option.

He's willing to hold the ball and not rush, unlike a number of our others. People confuse it for being lazy or indecisive.

While true, he can also miss options he should hit because he looks for better ones.

When he has played midfield yes . On the wing or half forward he is a lot better as he does not need to be looking at as many 360 options that midfielders do . It is more up the line or inside options.

I'm not sure where Kyle 'laconic' Langford is at...
He missed a big chunk of footy last year, has been unimpressive on the training track pre-season and was awful in the match sim against GCoast - he didnt seem to want to chase opposition players..!!
Is he still a walk up start senior player? If so where does he play?

Awful? What game were you watching?

He was quiet but he was influential ball in hand when he got it. Good to see your hyperbolic nature hasn't changed.

Going to go down the unpopular road here. He is one of the players who does not transition from attack to defense mode quick enough. Not sure if his brain ticks over at the speed needed. Seems to be a fraction of a second behind when the opposition win the footy and take off. Not just basing it on Thursday. Have been looking at it for a while now and I think it is why he does not translate into a midfielder. Not saying he is not a good winger or half forward and he does not always try and do the team stuff but I have questions on how quick he reads the play in regards to defensive actions.

Will be interesting with the new coaching regime that mandates tackling and chasing but otherwise wants players in their best spot instead of prescribed roles.

In the interview a week or two ago he said he’d be 60-40 mid/fwd because it gets him the third tall defender which is usually a favourable match up.

Pretty sure he is still getting over the injury he had last year… it’s all healed now but the conditioning is uneven, one side is stronger than the other. So that will have an impact too in terms of preseason performances.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Perkins that misses out once Langford has his body right.

Welcome to Team Kelvin. Your journey starts here, Godspeed.

With the quality of forward/wing competition right now I don’t think there’s too many walk up starts aside from Peter Wright.

Ideally Langford would be the 3rd tall/medium marking forward which he’s competing with Stringer, Jones and Voss for as well as all the smalls

He’s penciled into my best 18 in that role (with Stringer off the bench) but he’s going to have to work hard to keep it

Looking at the Gold Coast game he looked slow and lacked touch. Would not surprise me to see him bustled out, come round 1. Evolution has selected against the slow medium flanker.

For sure. Mediums need to be balanced players to succeed. Offer more than your typical small physically and in the air and more mobility than a tall on the ground.

A slow medium player is just an undersized tall.

Wouldn’t be surprised if his back is playing up after his hammy. Those two usually go and hand in hand, apparently it’s been a slow build this summer for him trying to get his body right.
I have a bad back. I reckon I've done about 10-15 hammies in my life.

The beer and junk food don't help

I've got a bad back, and haven't had too much in the way of hammy troubles. I'm on the junk food and cider diet though... so maybe change the beer for cider?
Cider is the bastard child between juice and beer.

good chance for round 1 after impressive VFL return from injury
Small forward Matt Guelfi and midfielder Kyle Langford did their round one selection chances no harm following impressive performances in the VFL practice match against Frankston on Saturday.

Apparently did well off halfback in the VFL practice game.

Interesting wrinkle if it works.

The list of roaming medium forwards that have gone to half back and excelled is about a mile long at this point so you can certainly understand it but given his marking and typically arrow straight set shot I’m not sure we can afford to not play him in that front half.

He played almost everywhere on the ground as a junior coz of some philosophy his old man had about being a team player (old man also did a fair bit of his coaching).

Not surprising if he’s rotating around a bit more, but the man himself said 60-40 mid/fwd where he can catch the third tall.
