Player Watch #40: Callum Coleman-Jones

I reckon he's potentially a 50+ goal a year forward and 2nd ruck for a decade. Id be pretty keen to hold onto that chess piece. Problem is I don't think we can play him and Lynch as the two big forwards. Ideally someone like CCJ plays deep out of the square and 2nd forward is someone a bit more mobile.

He is definitely not a 50+ forward playing alongside Lynch, that is right.

Which basically means he is deadsmack on target to be Peter Wright.

4th in the comp for contested marks per game. Not bad for a bloke that's played 4 games.

Plenty to work with. We should try keep him unless an offer too good to refuse comes up.

What is an offer "too good" ? thats the real question here.

If we get offered a pick in the top 15 - is that "too good"? Top 10?

Crazy if we entertain a trade going along beautifully taking marks down the line and everything.

An an ideal world he wouldnt be - but the reality is he is out of contract, and likely to get offered a stupid amount close to $500k from a team that needs a KPF. He can also net us a solid first round pick, that could be used to snag us Cerra.

The question is not "do we keep him". The question is "how" & "at what cost".

Remember that Lynch turns 30 next year, has a pretty strong injury history and his form isn't great.

Not sure we'd want to be cutting CCJ who looks like he could play that big man contested mark role and hit up the ruck. If we are on the decline, then CCJ is the future, not Lynch.

I dont want to lose him. If we do we are ****ed for developing forwards.

Coleman-Jones is doing really well, couldn’t be happier with him. But his direct opponents so far have been 19 and 20yo kids, and unsure who the bombers had on him, was it Stewart? If so, he is a fringe AFL player. What I did like seeing was some decent ruckwork against Allen, CCJ looked really comfortable competing with Allen at all times and Allen is really highly rated. See if he lines up on Howard against the Saints, he is probably one level up from the direct opponents he has had so far. Then after that see if he can hold his own v Harris Andrews. Regardless, he is definitely looking a healthy prospect in his first few games. Hopefully we hang on to CCJ.

Thought he was good again tonight. Had 7 marks (3 of them contested) and competed well. Could've got a real advantage rucking him against Allen, but as the game progressed we seemed keen to keep him forward.

Was good to hear Dimma say in his presser that he can play in the same side as Lynch. I think our best setup up forward is a "three headed monster" with Lynch, CJ and Riewoldt (using CJ as second ruck).

Chol is going okay, but CJ is soooo much stronger in the air.

KP players of his talent don't come easy not like a midfielders move someone else on his a priority.

Im in the 'Keep if we can camp'

I have been impressed with his foward work and marking ability in the foward line and he provides a decent ruck relief which will only improve in time along with the rest of his game.

If he wants to leave then thats really out of our hands but we MUST play him every game this year and if he leaves maximise our compensation with a #10-#15 pick to replace him in the team.

Lynch - CJ - Riewoldt foward line is a must

Does he move up the list if they paid the one 15m out in the first that he held for 2 months?

Spot on he's been playing on kids with about the same experience as him .
He looks like he can make it .
It will be interesting too see how we structure with the three talls .
Jack roaming half forward ,Lynch and CCJ deep and CCJ doing the relief ruck with Nank .

If we play him alongside Jack and Tom he'll continue to get lesser experienced match ups too. Stewart is a good defender, rubbish forward.

Top 10 would be pretty damn hard to knock back. Someone said in the trade thread GC will offer their first pick

We need to keep at least one of chol and ccj. Chol will probably get us little in terms of a compensation pick so we may be better off trading ccj if we can't keep them both?

Where the hell was this bloke when we needed him in the last Q, stuck at FF. Marked everything that came his way up the ground, but in the last Q, Jack himself or by coaching orders was up at CHF and was out marked or out bodies at every contest. They did what we do to sides. Reckon it was a big part of why we lost. The kid can mark a ball.

We are poor usually at taking that pack mark on the wing when the ball is coming out of defence. CJ took some great marks early. We've got to be playing someone who can mark or the ball goes straight back to opponents goal. I thought Caddy's marking skills might be good for this but not seeing it enough.

We have one and he was stranded at FF when we needed him.

Don’t have to be, did you not see the eagle pair Last night? Bloody scary.
he just need some spread form lynch and it’s going to be a backlines nightmare.
One plays deep the other high, swapping when the high bloke gets buggered. Jack can fit in and use his brains, as his brawn is becoming less effective, not that he was ever particularly brawny.

Spot on, as jack ages, he won’t have the stamina to take on two and three defenders, but with two giants ther he can use his smarts to play wherever he sees fit,

If he does want out, we need to be asking for a top ten pick. 200cm marking key forwards like him don't come along every day. We paid an absolute premium for Lynch.
We got a bargain with Lynch being FA.
Its a great reflection on our development team that our 3 young Bucks would fetch a top 10 pick.
