Needs to take the next step.

Agree. But think he is more than capable. To take his game to another level he needs to:

1. Work on defensive positioning.
2. Have more defensive impact (spoils 1%er's & tackles)
3. Improve tank so that he can get up the ground more and provide a running option to utilize his elite kicking.

Its only early days but there is a lot to work with.

The key is getting consistent opportunity. There are lots of blokes in line for that position, and he won't necessarily get multiple goes at it if he under-performs. Any senior game he gets he needs to take his chance.

Murphy is a player you want the ball in the hands of as much as possible. His challenge looks to be more involvement which relates to fitness as you mention and also smarts.

Interesting that his senior disposal numbers actually declined game by game - 14, 12, 10, 7.

The nearest current North player comparison is probably MacMillan. An equivalent head to head below.

  • Murphy looks heavier than 82kg
  • Disposals very similar, hopefully Murphy can up his kick ratio to be in MacMillan territory subject to gameplan. Ditto inside 50s
  • Bullshit aside about MacMillan's shortcomings, Murphy's numbers line up pretty closely at the same age. If he can develop on a similar trajectory we'll have a player

Kicking Macmillan's arse in all those stats that weren't kept in 2011 though.

Fair enough, but MacMillan has him done for smarts and is a tad quicker, and that's the thing with Tom, he's not quite tall enough and not quite quick enough either. I don't reckon J-Mac is the suitable comparison here mate.

I don't believe that either.

IMO, Tommy needs to learn to play taller.

Dr Snake's prescription is for more muscle, more aggression, more work on his overhead game, and to model himself on this bloke (who was also 189cm)

Fair points Tef. MacMillan was nearest equivalent for size and being used almost exclusively off HB. Agree he plays a more running based game and is a more natural accumulator. Hence why one was a 3rd rounder and one was a rookie I guess. MacMahon was probably the nearer comparison for playing style although Loose was more dynamic too.

Spud is a pretty high bar for Tom (I recognise you mean just for modelling on). You're talking a very good OH mark, super competitive player with the ability to break through congestion and hoof it a mile. Even based on junior footage it's only the last point and a little of the 1st point they have in common so far.

At the same stage Tom has Spud for precision kicking. Spud has him in every other facet of the game.

Is the perfect type of player for Shaw to take under his personal wing. i.e. Half-back, needs to be stronger one-on-one and needs to get fitter. At the moment, he's just a tall hb flanker.

The weight is the issue. Spud has 11kgs on him (according to the website)

Love how everyone who bagged the previous slow, defensively suspect beautiful kick who couldn't quite find enough of the ball thinks the new slow, defensively suspect beautiful kick who can't quite find enough of the ball is going to be great.

(of course as the last man standing to stick up for Bread I'm also hopeful Tom will turn out ok).

He's gotta find a point of difference mate. Still has time.

I'd be happy for him to take every kick-in for the year. With the rule changes I want a blanket ban on any kick-in that travels less than 50 metres. No excuse for the cop-out chip to the back pocket anymore.

Good to hear that Shaw has really taken him under his wing.

Mentioned in the VFL highlights video that he is trying to get Murphy’s balance right between offence & defence. Murphy is yet to prove himself as a defender and Shaw is the perfect man to teach him the craft. Having Whitecross by his side will help as well.

Look forward to seeing him progress this year. His kicking is something we really need in the senior side.

IMO Murphy realistically looks no better than Hibberd. And Hibberd could regularly find the footy at VFL level. Murphy shouldn't be in the 1s until he actually gets a kick in the scoobs. The way people routinely slag off regular senior players, who have for the most part been good players, in favour of untried kids who have shown nothing other than an occasional glimpse even at 2s level still amazes me. I hope he comes on, but let's be realistic. He is, and should be, well down the pecking order.

I would argue there are far better users of the pill in the seniors.

He is trying to get into the backline. He is currently a better kick than Williams, EVW and McDonald. Obviously not as good defensively as any of those 3.

He is a long way down the pecking order but there is a hell of a lot to work with. We don’t have many blokes on our list than can pin point a 55+m kick like Murphy can.

Name these so called good users of the ball in our back line at present. We have Thommo and Wright (and McMillan to a degree) who know how to kick the ball to our advantage - and by no means are they elite in the area.

Murphy is not ready just yet for a guaranteed spot in our defence but he has one weapon the other 8 or so in front of him don't have - a good leg.

Poor skills in our back half is a serious weakness in our team structure at present.
