Despite the different positions, Unsure why you’d lock in smith before sonsie unless they feel they can shop sonie for a 3rd rounder or similar
There might be a suitor for Sonsie - more so than Smith anyway.

We’re not desperate for flanker cum below avg mids, we are however very light on for small defenders. So from a positional balance perspective it does make a lot of sense.

I’m surprised we’ve re-signed Smith. Looked average at AFL level.
Maybe, Blair saw enough improvement at VFL level to warrant 1 more season.
Re Sons, I don’t think his game stacks up, to the physicality and speed of AFL football.

Also Smith is more or less 2 years younger which means he isn't as exposed as Sonsie.

Don’t we have two Rookie A spots vacant? Whats stopping us from delisting Dow/Sonz and redrafting them on the Rookie list?

The way I see it is; we have three Primary list spots available. Kaps, Kosi and Young. If we take a F2 for Young then we keep 1 of Dow/Sonz on the Primary List. If we get an offer too good to refuse for pick 3 and split it R1 pick this year and a F1, then we Rookie both and take three picks this year.
I think they’ll both remain Tigers it just depends which list they remain on imo.

So am I, imagined that sonz would be higher priority than smith

Reading between the lines here, it’s pretty safe to assume that Sons is being shopped around at this stage?

Doesn’t mean he won’t eventually get offered an extension, but that the club is hoping to get an offer for him from elsewhere?

Sadly, Sonsie isn’t at the level. He doesn’t have any physical attributes that standout. He’s not strong over the ball or fearless in his attack on the contest. He doesn’t hit the scoreboard or his forward craft isn’t elite (aka Kane Lambert). We have cover for the role he plays. If he’s not under pressure his kicking is elite, but if he is, he turns it over. I don’t like potting players who wear the Yellow and Black, but we need to move on.

He’s technically a nice kick and that needs to be a weapon if he’s to stamp himself at the level , for mine he plays too safe , prob to do with structures and system in any case his efforts lack impact

He does some things that scream elite, some of the decisions to take on tough kicks and hitting them. I think it’s crazy to offload a 22 year old, that was an elite mid at junior level.

Yea I’d offer him a 12m contract and would certainly have before smith

As our President said the AFL doesn't do us anyfavours, so our ability to identify and develop talent is critical to us being successful. I haven’t heard a lot of noise about clubs wanting to trade for Sonsie. He’s had 4 years in the system and is out of contract. His kicking can be elite, but I’d argue it’s not damaging when he’s under pressure. I’d also say there’s a lot of aspects to his game that aren’t at the level. In my mind, he’s holding a spot on the list that can be used on a young player. I’d much prefer us to take a punt on a Harry Scott.
