Player Watch #40 Tyler Sonsie - Re-Signed For 2026

I reckon Sonsie has what it takes, if played in the right way. 2025 we wouldn't play him to his strengths. So if we won't allow him to play to do what he does best, then let him go.

Playing him as a grunt running player isn't working.

But he has serious skills and a high ceiling - IMHO. So what is the club going to do? If we reckon his spot is taken by our draftees, then goodbye. If not then at least 1 more year.

Another hater, a few on here, sad to see
Hey, hold on, I'm a lover, you're the fighter  . You always maintain the club knows what they are doing, so by the looks of it, he is on a tight rope. What will your thoughts be when they let him go?

The club is bigger than the individual. Players should play where they are placed. Mansell is a good defender, but look where he plays, and so do others. Gone are the days when you had specialist positions; now you have to be a utility.

I agree with you, he’s definitely on a tight rope but there’s no need for posters to sledge the kid, just imo.
We picked him in the draft and have tried to develop him, if it doesn’t work out, I’m not going to hang Sonsie and bag him. I’m sure he’s trying his best to do what the club asks of him.
I’ll be disappointed if they delist him, as I think he’s got great ability (more than Dow imo) but I understand that the club knows better than me about what players they believe can take us back to the top. If he’s not seen to be part of that, that’s their call. They see him around the club and on the training track every day, none of us do.

Does he though? For a supposed elite kick he rarely ever shows it.

Yes, but also players tend to be good at certain things.

Smart coaching gets players doing what they are good at - and tries to add to their portfolio over time.

Following your logic Lynch should be able to play as a rover, and MRJ as a KPD.

All I am saying is that it is not 100% player, it is a combo of the player, the coaches and the list. If the club sees, long term, Sonsie competing with Lalor and Smillie for a spot, then yeah he is gone - unless he really steps his game up. Or, if they see him as being a more hybrid mid then he has to add some things to his game and he's fine. We'll see.

no contract for next year and its october 17 . blair hartley umm n ahhed when asked today

he is delisted

From what Blair has said both these guys are right on the edge is my interpretation it could go either way for them by the end of the draft?...

Yes, I see that. But I also see him hitting targets by foot and hand that are difficult. I reckon his kicking issues are mainly mental rather than skill. He tends to stop and prop and then try some 'genius' kick that the 'receiver' doesn't see. To some extent he reminds me of Sheds when he started. It took some time for Sheds and this team mates to get it together - then WOW!

I'm not saying Sonsie is Sheds rebuilt - he's not. But to me he looks like his brain is working on different tracks sometimes. For some players that leads to no change and what might have been, for some they learn and suddenly you're going 'wow, he's got serious talent, where did that come from?'.

I was pretty hot on Sonsie, I'm now much more 'he's got talent, but there is a lot of work to do.'

It ain’t a joke it’s a fact. Probably the highest earner and definitely the best football knowledge on here. Deal with it.

I called Sonsie, Ross, Ryan and Ralphshit list cloggers 3 years ago. Spot on.
Would have taken Dr Davidson mid season. Spot on
Said straight after the draft last year we’d regret taking Smillie over Tauru and passing on Reid and Shanahan. Spot on.

We’d have a 10yr dynasty if I took over from Blair.

About the only thing I’ve ever got wrong is Miller and it’s taken 7 years for him to come good. Even last year he was rubbish on most outings.
As the late great Max Walker once said, if you're actually any good people will tell you, you won't have to tell them.

it will depend on if we split any of our picks and how many we bring in
then i guess we them 1 year deals if there is space
It's going to need to be an amazing offer for that to happen. He sounded very settled with the two picks.

I’d like to congratulate the club for giving both Tyler and Thomson every opportunity to succeed. They were both given extended runs in the seniors this year. They both have AFL attributes, but also have significant faults in their games. I suspect if another club wanted to bring them into their program, we wouldn’t have blocked the trade.

I’m not assuming we are going to delist them, but the comments by Blair suggest that there is a chance they won’t be at Tigerland in 2026.

Like many Tiger supporters I’ve seen my fair share of players who have worn the yellow and black, who sadly weren’t at the level. This was particularly the case in the mid 80’s and 90’s. I remember asking Neville Crowe at a fan forum in the old social club, what he thought of Michael Laffy. For the success of the club, there will be some good souls who will be let go. I’m certain the club will acknowledged their contribution both now and in the future.

Everyone agrees he needs to change or at least improve. Is it possible? I don't know but Tim Buckley went from a dime a dozen folk singer, though some said he was better to this. watch where he was one of the originators of sex-funk. listen to his vocals in the middle to the end and anything is possible. For what its worth i am in the camp of try something new with him and Dow.

I think the writing is on the wall, has to wait to till draft night, I think he probably gets delisted.
If all goes to plan draft night.

He has had enough chances to breakthrough it's not like our list is world beaters. other player show promise.

List lodgement by 31st Oct. we should know before then

We have the list spots so i am leaning towards giving both 1 year deals or delist a rookie list for another year
this is a weak draft and we will have to delist players next year so whats the point of taking new kids that are rated very low or rookie. Atleast they are mature enough players now to hold a spot if injuries hit again
