Query 400 Gamers

I think we need the 2013 and 2014 Guides to know how many he played pre NAB Challenge and JLT Series.
The 2013 book says 15 "Pre-Season Competition" games played, the next year's book says 16. So they most certainly are still counting those games!

Have updated the 400 Table.

Any SANFL or WAFL players that should be added? Surely Michael Redden played 400? I believe that number is wrong, he played 379 games for North Adelaide, not 389. He also played 11 games for the South Australia. So that makes 390.

There have been no AFL pre-season/night series competition matches since the 2013 season.

The matches we see these days prior to the main season are practice matches only, televised and promoted to the nth degree yes, but still only practice matches.

On a hot day in late summer in the early 1970s, and thanks to TV signal skipping across Bass Strait,
I watched a practice match live (via Channel 0 ?) Hudson play for Hawthorn v South Melbourne.
Don't think those goals are counted in his career record.

Burgoyne's pre/night series match tally was 16 at the end of the 2013 season and in my opinion that total is what should be shown as part of his career record. See page 673 of the 2014 Season Guide.

International Rules is a different sport too and strictly speaking those matches should be listed separately.

Have fixed the Wikipedia tally, yes 379 not 389.
I suspect that figure already includes his pre-season/night series games, so 390 (incl state games) might be as high as his total will reach.

SA totals counted preseason games and in the 1980's and early 19990's was as many as 5 games a year + a final for the Escort Cup and when smoking advertising was banned became the Foundation cup. So I cant see there being any additional games. 378 games + 11 state games is the total I have seen for Mick.

From the North Adelaide FC wiki page it says
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Adelaide_Football_Club#Club_Records
  • Most Games: 334 by Michael Redden (1978–93)[1]
References[edit]
  1. Jump up^ This total refers to premiership matches (home and away and finals matches) only.
So this looks like someone has done the split and 44 or 45 preseason games would be about right as Mick used to have a long drive from his farm in Pekina in the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide think 250+kms so he wouldn't have played every preseaon game over 16 seasons.

In my previous post I have seen Redden's record as 378 games for North + 11 for state games = 389 in SANFL yearbooks I have for the 1990's. But his SA Football Hall of Fame record - the HofF was established in 2002.

PLAYING RECORD:
• 379 games and 152 goals for North Adelaide, 1978 – 1993 (record for number of games played for North Adelaide)
• Captain of North Adelaide 1993

PREMIERSHIPS:
• Member of premiership teams for North Adelaide, 1987 and 1991

MATCHES FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA: 11
• Captain of South Australia 1991

One thing that's always boggled my mind is the amount of 300-game players (not even 400) that the SANFL and VFL had when compared to the WAFL.
WAFL players started going in decent numbers to the VFL every year in the early to mid 1970's but plenty went in the 1960's. SANFL were 10-12 years behind with annual big numbers moving over the border not happening until mid 1980's and dribbs and drabs in the 1970's.

That stability to personal and footy life probably contributed to the lack of 300 gamers in WAFL vs SANFL. Plus SANFL official figures include preseason cup games which have to be considered and I have no idea what sort of preseason cup games were played in WAFL between 1960-1990 period.

If a WAFL player went and played for 5 years in the tougher VFL in that 1975-85 period, he might have only played 80 or 90 games in the VFL if he was a good but not great player and didnt have any major injuries, whereas if he played for a successful finals WAFL club, he could have played 110-120 games and in SA over those 5 years it could have been 110-120 games plus 20 preseason games counted in his total.
