I'm hoping I am wrong but I thought those hesitations occurred because he couldn't run onto his left side at all.
To me it looked more like him assessing what's ahead and seeing little movement but acres of space in front, then off he went again.

Can anyone give me an estimate of what your average third year player might be offered in a contract? Just curious?
The average non-entry contract is about $350K. That includes the big paydays for established players as well as the kids coming off their draftee deals, obvs.
Should expect $250K-$350K.

What do my esteemed peers think that Declan is worth to us. $250k over two years, $400k over three? That assumes, of course, that money is the issue.

So what would you bid?

Declan offers what we don't have, so, salary cap permitting, I offer him a more generous, longer term contract.

You'd think we'd give him an offer he can't refuse, would be shattered if he left. Has so much of what we lack and will only get better. Quick, tough, not a shocking kick, versatile and backs himself to take the game on, I struggle to think of anyone else on our list with those kind of attributes. Probably still needs to find more of it and could be a bit more damaging with his disposal but I can't see him dropping out of the 22 from this point on.

Nor can i. The confidence to take on a player like that at AFL level can't be taught. Jy does it too. Keep him in. See how he goes in the next 2 games. If he goes well offer him a 3 year deal.

With the salary cap going up by 20%, that $350K average becomes more like $420K. Maybe 3x$350K or 2x$400K?

Agree GG, this is why i reckon he is being wasted in a tagging role, use him as a weapon where he can back himself more often.

He might be the sort of player who goes really well with Cunners. I could see them becoming a good unit. He can accelerate and move nicely. Cunners can get the ball and use it creatively. Everyone else can learn how to shepherd, block and create space for them.

(Edit. I can't believe I forgot to put a shepherd in there. Must be a NM thing.)
