Traded #42: Massimoe D'Ambrosioe - Thank you for your service

Our list has too many deficiencies at the moment to get the best out of a player with one elite attribute and a number of average ones.

You could straight swap him in for Heppell or Hind tomorrow and have Mmmm an element of success. It’s a choice.

And obviously given he’s 20 and only been on the list for a smidge over a year you would project some kind of improvement as he works into it.

Choice is an extremely underrated component of players making it. There is no objective test players can pass, no accreditation. Someone with the power to select a team or part of it just needs to make a choice.

Liam Baker was embarrassing when he started as a defender. He has evolved into something like a follower who floats around using his skill and creativity.

It looks like Fremantle is doing the same, albeit from half forward, with Liam Henry.

If there was one player on Essendon's list that I would leave to float around, setting up to receive the ball, it would be D'Ambrosio. His kicking and vision are just that good.

Players like that do need to have that luck that they go to a club which makes the choice to use them. All clubs makes these decisions. We currently do it with a guy who can't kick, for example.

Think we’d be crazy to let him go. He’s shown plenty for a 20 year old under any circumstances let alone one who only got picked up in the mid season draft.
Its not necessarily letting him go. Thats only the case if theyre contracted then tou have that ability

Its more so he wants to go

On a side note i feel maybe this will be one where we focus too much on what he cant do down back as opposed to what he can do

It’s more like, ‘he’s a great fella and great clubman and we like him so we’re making him half back emeritus’ but like I said, I essentially can’t not see him being as good as a Jake Lloyd or Caleb Daniel type designated kicker if we actually just gave him the gig.

He could not play another game for us and you still tip your hat to Dodoro for finding a winner.

Richmond found a way to use Bachar Houli who was as soft as butter and couldn't defend a sandcastle in a kindergarten. Rest is history.

We need to do the same here.

Send him to richmond to win 3 flags whilst we wallow away in mediocrity for another decade?

Out for the season with a lateral ligament knee injury (definitely not a corkie!)
Apparently the corkie is taking him out for the year
4 week Corkie? Hmmm.
listed as a knee in the injury update
PS. Out for the season with a knee injury of some description

It's a lateral ligament (or lateral collateral ligament; LCL), season ender

Second-year defender Massimo D’Ambrosio will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee (lateral ligament) injury in Essendon VFL’s round 19 clash with Sydney.

Surgery for lateral ligament tear, season done
Had surgery last week, out for the season

Further to the news of defender Massimo D’Ambrosio being ruled out for the season last week with a knee injury, the club can confirm the 20-year-old had successful surgery to repair a lateral ligament tear.

Jay Nash had an elite kick.

Not sure where he sits. Obviously has elite traits, also has some obvious flaws. I’d give him a year but honestly wouldn’t be terribly shocked if we cut him (moreso if we go the deep cut route).

if he's in the forward line he could potentially be played as a gryan miers type player: facilitating high quality and high impact entries into the forward 50

Jay Nash had an elite kick.

Not as good as Mass. Nash lacked dexterity, he was a straight line kick. Similar to Stanton. They couldnt really adjust their techniques under pressure. Mass can cut angles, kick under smothers and pull kicks.

Is Mass in the same situation as a younger Kane Farrell?

Farrell was given time to work on his game but was in and out of the side while doing so, playing forward, back and wing. It's only the last 2 years he's found his niche in the side despite always having a cannon for a leg.
