Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

You can't compare Stack's kicking with Short's. Short's value is that he does kick it long and over defences, which is a good asset, but that is pretty much it kicking wise. One reason he kicks it so far is because he rarely receives it through the middle of the ground and 9 times out of 10 he is kicking it from out wide down the wing/hf near the boundary line. It's a good kick but not a creative kick.

Houli by comparison gets so much ball running through the middle of the ground because he such an offensive runner, and so often kicks it to dangerous positions. This is often on a 45º so the metres gained is half of Shorts but usually much more creative.

Stack can do both, his metres gained is not great because he see's opportunities that are often short or long or wide, but always to advantage.

Imagine the damage he could do coming in after a few minutes when the oppositions second string mids are in the middle. As I said a week or so back it's also about developing the next wave coming through and what better opportunity than having the likes of Graham or Ross being matched up against the oppositions best mids. But that's a discussion for another thread, not the Stack thread.
Imagine both Sheds and Stack waxing moving fwd until either is in range to hit Jack/Lynch or Dusty on the Tit(because Dusty can't take a overhead mark)in our first foray.
And you wanna delay such magic?

How often have we actually seen Edwards stream out of the first bounce and hit up a forward on the lead? Not that often.

Again this isn't about Edwards starting position, it's about Stack and whether he really is a walk up start that most seem to think he is, when so far this preseason everything has pointed to him not actually being so.

Played on the 2nd 22 during the intra club then started on the bench on Sunday. With a full compliment to pick from this weekend I'll be interested in seeing what happens.

Stack is walk right in sit right down best 22. He is like a mini Edwards, can go anywhere and play anywhere and play it realy well. Only thing stopping him is himself.
Who does he replace in the side?

Without a doubt Stack is best 22 versatile talent to burn X factor some have short memories.
Memory is fine. As I said as talented a young player as we've seen, but right now I think the club has others ahead of him.

Well I would have had him miles ahead of Baker until last weekend. Baker was probably one who would have been super nervous, but if last week was his 2020 form or close to it, then he is a lock for now.

I would have Stack ahead of Bolton but he certainly isnt a lock.

Early preseason I had similar thoughts, but then came the intra club reports where Stack wasn't best 22 side while Baker was, then came Sunday where Baker started and went on with it, while Stack came off the bench, which for me says Baker has nudged ahead and Stack is being made to earn it, much like RCD is being made to

My current bench is: Edwards Lambert Pickett 2nd ruck. Who goes out to put Stack in?

The way I read it we're not looking at playing Broad as a Gaff type of wing who runs and carries, we're looking at playing him in the defensive wing role to fold back and be the 7th defender who covers for Houli Baker Short when they take off when we have possession, not only that but Broad gives us that extra option of being the 3rd man up in a contest to support the likes of Astbury Grimes Vlastuin in aerial contests, something that Stack isn't quite as adept at. Broad also adds flexibility in that if needed we can roll him back into D50 to play a more defensive shut down role if an opposition forward gets hot and the match ups need to change.

the problem with this is the assumption that everyone in your 22 will be fully fit for the whole season

even with a decent injury run we had before last season we still had guys out throughout the year
there will always be injury’s so there is no point to just have an arbitrary best 22 because the available best 22 is always changing

Who does he replace in the side?
it’s tough for spots that’s for sure.

id put him in front
George
Rioli
for a start.
players he could well grow past this year (not just yet).
short
broad
players he could be surpass in future?
everyone - he has that type of talent, the question is if he can harvest it.

Not saying that he won't make the 22, just saying that if picking a r1 side right now I'm not sure he us in it.

By years end I expect him to be a lock but not at present.

Ellis
Graham unfit
Last report was they expect Graham to be fit for round 1 and possibly play on the weekend.

I think it would then come down to if they want to replace Graham with another pure mid in which case Ross could get the nod given he has come back slimmer and fitter than he was last year.

It's not exactly an easy question to answer given the quality of depth that we have assembled over the last few seasons.

Graham was already replaced by Pickett who was chosen ahead of Ross. Though Caddy probably did more of the Graham run with role than Marlion did.

So they’re not really looking to replace Graham but see if he comes back in.

My personal preference is short should give way.But I doubt that will happen.
In:Stack & Graham
Out:Ellis & Short.
I doubt Graham will be ready rnd 1.
Rnd 2 vs Pies will be interesting selection wise.

Maybe overall but shorts left is one of the biggest weapons we have coming out of the backline quite often he clears a teams entire defensive zone and creates scoring opportunities for us
He more often kicks it to the bad guys.
