Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

thats a lot of short blokes though, not sure they can all live in the one backline.
They don't, there's always one on the bench resting. We always play 7 and sometimes 8 defenders and they take the field depending on the oppo matchups and the need for breaks. You would rarely find a time when all four smalls are in the back half together.

Okay does not win premierships especially when Rance retires and we have other injuries, not to mention the rules changing.

How many are like Bolton? He is a freak, an anomaly from trend. Bolton is a categorical freak of nature on the football field, sorry he is in the way he moves, evades and touches the ball.

Name one player like Bolton in the last 60 years?? Wanganeen maybe, the rubber man, and he played in a different position
Krakouer bros...

Nope, Stack is a way better defender than most of the others in defence and we need to have better options at wing

We are trying to win premierships not run Salvation Army

We have too many defenders trying to make up numbers like having too many small forwards
I'm sure you could still find room to slot RCD onto a back flank tho right Magic ? Lol

(Some of us don't forget)

I still think Stack's best spot is the wing, such a great transition footballer, glides over the turf and great disposal. Playing half-back he knows the defensive structures, but his creativity transitioning to back to forward is where he could really shine for us. Plenty of guns play wing, McCluggage, Hill boys, Smith, Duncan, Whitfield, McCluggage.

Really needs a big preseason which he should get this year.

In all access today they where showing highlights of Rioli getting the ball from defence.

In one shot Stack was poised like a cat shooting the ball ahead with handball bum out confident as f.. pin point distribution, without fear, reading the play immaculately and with aplomb. Stack clearly is best as a defender and makes the others look like rabbits

I knew you would say that... ;)

Bolton is better and a better forward to.

The Krakeours where classy and skillful but Bolton is more devastating with more impact and greater versatility creating a far bigger matchup problem.

Bolton has more X-factor and ability to win the contest from freak movement and ball handling

So why can't he play midfield if he is that good. Generally speaking midfielders are more important, especially when we have such a good back 6 when all fit.
Our midfield has Prestia, 29 next year, who has been injured all year, Cotchin who is struggling, Edwards, injured and 33 next year, Dusty 30 next year and plays mid/forward and Bolton. That is pretty much it. Some emerging kids, but no bone fide A graders besides Bolton.

I agree with you regarding Bolton, never seen anyone with his lateral movement, freakish. Maurice Rioli was a bit that way but not as rubbery as Bolton. What that has to do with Stack is anyones guess.

Actually the most important players are forwards and backman because the contests related to scoring are most important. You win games from the scoreboard.

He is better suited as a backman because he does not have the lateral movement of Bolton amongst other things and we are trying to win premierships

Not Dusty, Bont, Dangerfield, Ablett, Judd, Bobby Skilton....

Judd never did much except when he kicked goals.

Dusty most impact was forward. Danger has not one a premiership, Judd one, Ablett started as a forward and played in good teams.

Ablett Jnr never as good as his old man who kicked 14 goals from a wing/half forward.

Bontempelli won one premiership but some say it was on the back of the umpires. Bontempelli has many good midfielders around him. If it was based on midfield Bulldogs would win it every year

What I love about Stack's return has been the lack of flash. He is doing his job and doing it well. Head down, bum up building the foundation.
I also liked his running to make position, quick and running into good spots. Shows he is finally afl fit. Seemed be enjoying himself after the siren too.

Yup - Stack is a bit of a tool on insta etc. but I do like his natural footballing ability.
Reads the play, makes good decisions and agree Growapair - has very much looked to play his role these past couple of weeks.

Would really love to see both him and Rioli settle at half back moving forward...

Cyril Rioli - didn't have to go back 60 years, just 5 years.

Settle down Magic, you only had to say that Stacky is better as a defender. Although you're way late to the party, most of us been saying that since 2019.

Everything you said is right but Boltons kicking action is poor...releases it too high, his clanger stats can't be great. How does his conversion in front of goal compare to the Kraks

I guess the charity reference is that Stack is better than Mansell and Rioli. Yes he is but it is hardly charity, they both played good football last weekend.

My main point is a gun midfielder is more important than a gun half back. Stack into our midfield could be a bit like Walsh at Carlton. Stack was an AA midfielder in the 2018 Nationals.
Stack wouldn't blink if being charged by a Rhino, it doesn't matter whether he would be a better midfielder, what matters is he will be our best backman, and he will bring a sense of calm to Mansell and Rioli with it
