Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

stack needs to stick to tik tok because the game has passed him, it is bloody sad but this is an ability unfulfilled and wont be filled.
How so, because he is not a forward pocket. Judge him further when he plays in a position that he can use his talent. He did get our best player last year one game off the half back after about 3 months back at the club with no preseason to speak of. The game can't pass you by in 6 months, but being played in the player killer position, forward pocket certainly can.

Tell me where he plays and I will spew up

Plenty of posts about Rioli in this thread. On current form Rioli is not going anywhere.
With Vlas and Lambert locks to come back in as soon as fit and Sonsie looking likely to get a crack at some point, I’d say we will be waiting a while before Stack gets a look at a senior game.

Nice selection problem to have with that sort of talent on standby.

You'd think SS would be going for parker / George spots.

Still not sure if he can match the workrate defensive efforts etc. Even if they are limited players.

He certainly has the talent to be a small forward, but I'm not sure he has the work ethic for it.

Small forwards have to have the will and the drive to provide continuous repeat sprints with the only reward often being a pressure act listed on the stats sheet.

Imo Stack needs to play down back, where he's more motivated to put in the effort because if he doesn't the consequence is much more visible to him = his opponent scores a goal.

The problem atm is we have an oversupply of small/medium defenders already, so it's a difficult route into the side for Stack. But playing him forward isn't working imo and he doesn't have the tank for midfield, so the backline is the only answer.

he would be a direct replacement for edwards..rotating as a small forward......why?

because he has goal sense like bolton and is great 1 v1.

Very good small forwards are a rare commodity. Look at ours over the last few years. Butler and Higgins, dropped and left, Rioli, the writing was on the wall before he was given a chance at half back. Aarts, fail. Castagna, well he's only survived because he is allowed to run up to half back to get a kick. Edwards has hardly touched it up forward since he has rotated through there this year.

Betts was a great one, but there is only one Eddy Betts. Liam Ryan goes okay but he is given licence to go where he wants, he certainly isn't a pressure forward ala Richmond. Melbourne's Kosi looks like a good one. It is not an easy spot to play. Bolton goes pretty well there if you want to waste him there, but Bolton is an athletic freak.

Stacks main strength is the way he can weave through a pack at full tilt and deliver the ball forward. He is a run and carry player and he looked like being a superstar there. So what do we do, we move him forward because he played one decent game there. To me he is a natural wingman/half back even midfielder if he ever got the fitness to do so. So play him there in the VFL until he does.

I was guessing lambert for edwards.

With vlastuin. Dusty? Grimes. Back in eventually hopefully not sure how stack gets in
That works, also you can do lambert for cotchin, give him a rest...not sure how stack gets in without much game time its going to be hard.

You give me a position he can play now in the side- who does he replace- if that’s a fit I will regurgitate
I am not talking Stack of right now, but one with a block of games up around the play were he can run into form. Wing half back midfield.
He could be playing midfield in the VFL for sure. Rioli, Street, Aarts are playing there, why not Stack.

I don't think he fits in anywhere right now, but I think that he could be played on the wing. He was our best player on the wing preseason with Pickett.
We only have two Mac and Pickett, so if an injury comes then at least he has been playing there.

I think he could replace Ralph Smith if he loses form on the half back, or if there is an injury, because what he did a few years ago whilst playing half back. was as good as anything RS or Rioli have produced, although Rioli has been very good this year so he would not be replacing him unless he suddenly loses form. We will have injuries at some stage.

He could replace Castagna as a high half forward, Castagna has had 5 shots at goal in 4 matches, and that is with him in reasonable form.

He should be played so that he can replace a player once they get injured, not stuck at FF for most of the match.

I dont doubt his ability but lets get it into perspective:
Pickett has the wing sown up. Macc isnt flash atm but he is our best choice (though I would love sonsie to play there)
He cant play back, he hasnt got a spot, riloi has that sewn up, despite Bachar saying personally to stack this position is yours he failed to take it.
Castanga and arrts are dimmas love childs so he wont play stack ahead of them.
Mids maybe one day he could be there but he has to get the pill, he isnt an extractor.
ATM he got a few touches on the weekend and people want to bring him in. sonsie, cumberland, clarke riloi, mansell, arrts, castagna, dow are all ahead of him. I actually reckon his best role may be at half forward but there are too manyahead of him. He will be delisted next year, pending an injury to castanga or aarts

We will see how it pans out in a few weeks after he gets some games into him, hopefully up the ground a bit. He is one of the more talented players at the club when up and going, you don't just chuck that out, well not after round 4 of a long season. Thought his attitude was good, so there is no reason why he won't bounce back.

And of the players you mentioned only Dow and Castagna are really ahead of him right now. Dow hopefully keeps going although at some stage he may need a spell, and Castagna is such an average player he will eventually lose his spot to one of the players you mentioned unless we keep on winning.

Thought Sonsie played bruise free footy on the weekend and Cumberland had a quiet one.

Bruise Free not sure about that got in and under on numerous occasions

I know I'm perpetuating the problem by posting here, but can we stop talking about this guy for a few weeks? He's always in the top few posts and yet he's done nothing this year to justify it. He's an almost certain delisting if he doesn't find some form, fitness and desire in the next 8 weeks.

Maybe. He was quieter than the week before where he was very good. Reckon he needs a good 6 weeks in the heat of some physical VFL matches before he is promoted.
Flashback to late last year when he was consistently in our best 5 players in the AFL .

I think he earnt that right and also his ceiling is like martin and Bolton.

stack no doubt is a very talented footballer. He turns up in poor shape each year and seems to not be ready to go until the halfway point of the season. Sadly he may never reach his potential. At what point will the club say enough is enough? Fingers crossed that the penny drops soon or I think Sydney maybe sent packing at years end.

I think his fitness is probably okay about now, or would be if he hadn't missed a few weeks with covid protocols then not played deep forward. Yes he was behind the pack months ago, but by now if he had not missed with covid and been played wing or half back his fitness would be fine. I doubt very much that there is any thought of delisting him right now, round 4. That may change by round 20, but no way you put a line through such a talented player this early in the season.

Of course there is no thought of delisting now as he's on the list and that won't change, however, by years end unless he starts playing a regular senior game then his name will be thrown into the mix for possible delisting. Lots of talent but he's shown very little application at this stage.

Very little application. He has been training since November. He is not your model AFL citizen for sure, but he is not that bad. But of course if he plays little senior footy then yes he will be in the mix, but with his talent there is a fair chance that he will get his turn. We will lose quite a few players next season, so opportunities will open up next year and with the amount of kids we took in the draft this year, they won't toss good players out looking for a speculative draft pick.
