Richmond has officially signed midfielder Sydney Stack as a rookie for season 2019.

Stack, who has been training with the Tigers since December and living with coach Damien Hardwick, joins the club as part of the AFL’s new pre-season supplemental selection period.

The 18-year-old is Richmond’s second signing under the new rules, alongside former Saint and Sun Mav Weller.

“We’re delighted to welcome Sydney to the club, he’s worked really hard to secure a spot on the list, and we know he’ll continue to work hard to develop his football,” Richmond football boss Balme said.

“Sydney’s got great speed, skill, and competes really hard, so we’re excited by what he’ll bring to the team.

“We think that Richmond is a positive environment for him, and we’re pleased with how he’s settling into the club and our football program.”

Stack was surprisingly overlooked at the national and rookie drafts in November.

Respected recruiter and former Hawthorn list guru Gary Buckenara had the West Australian rated at the 36th best player in last year’s draft pool.

He has been likened to West Coast excitement machine Liam Ryan.

“Stack is a very balanced midfielder who’s hard on the inside and electrifying on the outside,” Buckenara wrote in a Herald Sun column before the draft.

“He’s undersized for an inside midfielder, so I would expect him to spend more time on the outside at AFL level to apply his defensive pressure on the ball carrier.

“Stack can play other roles too, and can hit the scoreboard but his balance between offence and defence is the most impressive aspect he’ll bring to the club that drafts him.

“He’s a project player at his size but there is an x-factor about him that will surely excite clubs in need of this type of player.”

buckanera reckons too short
He’s 176cm and has probably grown since that measurement.

Dayne Zorko, Lachie Neale, Jack Higgins, Marc Murphy, Taylor Adams, Zac Merrett, Dion Prestia and Toby McLean are all 175 to 180cm. Daniel Kerr and Sam Mitchell were as well. Boomer Harvey was 172cm. Caleb Daniel is 167cm.

The Stackman will be a mid.

Hey people. With all this hype on this genuine superstar, why not try and get him as our fourth sponsored player.
30 people at $50 = $1500 and may get the job done

Damn. We waited years for the DOOZY. Every year people falsely claiming preseason a DOOZY was coming. Finally I had closed the book on the DOOZY when Lynch was signed. If Lynch was the DOOZY, who is this guy?

The ooey gooey

His highlights are brilliant. Can definitely see him being a midfielder long term.

I like a player who holds the ball and then makes good decisions. He reminds me a bit of a quick Stengle.

Ever since i have seen this kids highlights back in September /October last year i have been thinking this kid reminds me of somebody but just could not for the life of me work out who it was.

Today i was having lunch with a friend (bombers supporter) and was just about to leave and the feed come through that we had signed him up and told my mate that we had signed Sydney Stack and he had no idea who he was (understandably ) as he doesnt follow the draft.

I went and played the highlights for him and we were watching it and about 30 seconds into it my friend gavin said, Kid looks good and plays similarly to Michael Long
and right at that moment i thought thats who it was but for the life of me i just couldnt work out who he reminded me off.

Would be interested to see if anybody els can see the resemblance

Michael Long was 178cm

Looking at his highlights and bias toward kicking the ball after he weaves through traffic , reminds very much of Daniel Kerr , not some bloody reserves player that couldn’t crack a game we just traded out for a 4th round pick , don’t ever mention that again whilst I’m trying to contain my excitement

Apparently Bucks is moving into the Hardwick’s household in an effort to try and get in with the Tigers
Whilst you are on the right track you are mistaken

Its Treloar thats trying to move in with Hardwick

Last seen crying at Dimma's door on the weekend

That's what I see too, Long's vision (might have needed glasses) and his ability to hit up and release teammates was sublime

He spoke quite well in the video as well.
Seems like a good kid

Awesome. video. of Stacky I’m front of the boys ..lots of love in the room...boys really supportive...singing the Sydney song...

Sticky had that look in his eye suggesting he was going to pay the club back 10 fold....”I couldn’t imagine myself being anywhere else”
