Effort over time is what’s missing, don’t get me wrong I think he’s a ripper but you don’t want the majority of your reason for a long term contract to be speculation.
I don’t think he’d look great to a different player group if he left for more money
Ok so hypothetically, let's say Stack is at Geelong now, doing exactly what he is doing with us, killing it. And let's say we had a need for a player like that, say Houli is forced into retirement by injury. The Cats offer him $250k x 2 years to stay. We offer $350k x 3 years and he leaves, comes to us. Surely you take him and address the player group along the lines of him filling a need and the Cats couldn't/wouldn't offer him what he was worth due to cap space/other players filling same need. You would surely expect our players to embrace the guy, not reject him because he refused to accept an offer substantially below his value, wouldn't you?
If we are talking $800k contracts, ok that is a very different thing, but what is his true market value salary as of now? I understand and agree with your point about speculation, but it is educated speculation based on four very impressive matches(and likely more to come.) If they did the draft again right now, this bloke goes well inside the first round surely. I just think what he is achieving is worth clearly more than a really good young player on a more normal development curve. And back yourself as a club to give him the best possible support to stay on track.
