Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

What has me getting very moist is that he is so young and physically under developed. Add some bulk and he'll be a genuine inside - outside midfielder. 2-3 years and we might have our Cotch replacement!

Absolutely staggering when you consider he only turned 19 two months ago. I find myself watching him and thinking he's a mature age player but he has soooo much development left in him which is scary for the rest of the competition.

Can't believe the hug/dap that he gave to Betts after that goal is even a debate. Thought it was a great sign of respect.

Agree. If Walsh wins it will be for the same reason players win other awards and AA selection: stats and groupthink over actual impact on games of football.

Of all the Rising Star eligible players, Stack is the best player having the best season. If he doesn't win it it will just be further evidence that the AFL doesn't have a clue about the game it runs (into the ground).

Sydney Stack’s high five with Eddie Betts makes people outraged for the sake of being outraged

Jon Ralph

No doubt Sydney Stack’s high five with Eddie Betts grabbed attention because we want our footballers to be dour, robotic creatures. Can we save the outrage for the truly outrageous, asks Jon Ralph.

Can we save the outrage for the truly outrageous?
As usual there has been the usual froth and bubble over Sydney’s Stack’s high five with Eddie Betts for one reason.

Because it was different.

No doubt it grabbed the attention because we want our footballers to be dour, robotic creatures who frown when they are sad and smile when they are happy.

But footballers - and the current generation - just aren’t built like that.

Sydney Stack certainly isn’t.

Just as Essendon’s Dyson Heppell smiled for a brief second when he comforted David Myers after his missed shot, Sydney did what Sydney does.

Which was high-five a football idol after a lead-up that gave context to exactly what it happened.

As Betts himself said, “Stack is a great young player but he keeps pushing you.

“Sydney kept saying all night, no special goals tonight brother.

“When I got it I said to him, told ya brother”.

The game was over as a contest and this brilliant young stud of a player had been schooled by the old veteran.

Stack flew for the contest, Betts stayed down and conjured yet another goal in a highlights reel as scintillating as anything Buddy Franklin or Adam Goodes have conjured.

The interaction was organic, immediate and brilliant.

Eddie Betts and Sydney Stack celebrate

If anyone thinks Stack isn’t a baller, or doesn’t give 100 per cent every single contest, they haven’t seen a second of his play this year.

When it comes time to go he goes like a raging bull, ironing out Jack Viney in one of this season’s iconic moments.

He should be every bit the Rising Star favourite alongside Carlton’s Sam Walsh.

A generation ago a throwback senior coach might asked Richmond players why they went over to Josh Jenkins to see if he was all right after his knee buckled behind him.

Why show any sympathy when you can instead put the foot to the throat?

Footy has changed.

So much so that Rory Sloane praised the Richmond players post-match for their care for a fallen player.

Players interact on social media, they become friends on International Rules tours and indigenous pre-season camps.

And above all at Richmond, they try to have fun while also play ruthless winning football.

Good on him , was like two boxers that had just belted the suitcases out of ea hugging after the bell , symbolic of mutual respect . Stacky will Be a champion , Eddie already is
just wanted to echo this..eddie is a star and you guys have a great prospect in stack. With half your first choice team out I thought you guys did a great job. Getting games into the kids is the silver lining to the injury cloud and when the 1st teamers come back, your club will be all the better in the long run for it as those kids will be pushing hard to get back in making all play harder to keep their spots

I seriously cant believe there is even any talk about the high five moment.

Stack is a serious player. Hes not just a gun first year player, hes legitimately a gun of the competition.

Have your rubbish stats - give me impact over stats anyday. His impact is way beyond any other first year player including Walsh

Who is outraged? Haven’t seen outrage

When you have a respect for greatness it’s the surface of what lies beneath which is a culture of excellence
When our capt Cotchin was carried off at the AO for his 200th last year and the crows players failed to acknowledge with a standing ovation , my immediate reaction was no wonder you lost the GF you Ill bred bunch of campaigners, show some respect if you have any

Typical Betts back of the pack goal...finished with a flukey kick on an angle that went in...
See the crow playing flying for the ball flick it backwards over his head with both hands to land at the back of the pack on the ground for Betts to gather who was awake to this tactic and moving at pace already...gathers and kicks for goal!
Wonder why we have'nt used this tactic at tigerland with TLynch occassionally tapping the ball backwards for our speedy short people to pounce on?!?
So obvious!

Also liked how our players went over to Jenkins after the game - class

Got to love Dimma for having a crack at the AFL during the post match presser.
Everybody had a crack last night we collectively just did not win the chocolates!

Stack would have to be one of the best first year players I have ever seen.
This kid has so much poise and class, never panics and his delivery is sublime.
ATM he is better than any of the top 10 draft picks including Walsh.
Put Wash in our side and he would get exposed due to the lack of support, not Stack he is a shining light and will only get better.
Next year I think he could be a permanent mid.

PS Gary Lyon is a flog

But you wouldn't think it watching him play! Last night there were moments where I thought, you're gone, but he somehow managed to out maneuver or out muscle his opponent! Imagine how much stronger he'll become!

Gary said something on the lines of i don't like it/i don't know how it feel about that.....

Well Gary, I don't like it when people bang their best mates mrs either... Flog
It's the Richmond way and apparently it generates oppo angst!
It's Richmond then it must be bad!

Absolutely, two way respect there I think. I thought it was a beautiful display of sportsmanship!
