Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

Stack was never going to be realistically ready for AFL before mid season once his pre season got destroyed. All the reports I have read from the coaches indicate he is meeting reasonable expectations and they were planning to give him more and more time around the ball as his fitness improved.

He is a super player talent wise and once fully fit it is just a matter of getting his instinctive style of play to fit into the team’s system.

For some perspective, Stack has only just turned 21, and is the 8th youngest player on our list. He has played 26 AFL games, the 7 players younger than him have played 26 combined and Jack Ross accounts for 20 of those(further perspective on Ross.) Stack is a year and 4 months younger than Bolton. There are 11 players under 24 on our list who are older than Stack. Only four of those, Baker(54 games) Graham(67 games) Bolton(57 games) and Balta(42 games) have played more AFL games than Stack. Bolton and Balta are absolute guns of their age group. Graham has already fielded offers over $600k x 4 years from reports I have read. And Baker is more than two years older than Stack and is a really good player as well. Collier-Dawkins, Miller, Coleman-Jones, Naish, Garthwaite, and Egg-Smith are all older than Stack and have had less impact so far. Chol is over 3 years older and has played 3 less AFL matches.

Stack has played exactly the same amount of games Bolton had played when he was Stack’s age.

For mine, Stack remains one of our brightest young prospects, so long as he stays focussed on playing his best footy. I would be surprised if he doesn’t have some sort of run of hot form this season, even if it is in the VFL.
Great post. Stack is a diamond. And like some diamonds you have to polish off the rough edges, put in a lot of time and effort and if you do, it just might you get a real beauty.

Apart from Shai this guy is the most talented kid we have on our list by a fair way. Go back and take a look at his highlights package in those first 26 games. No he isn't perfect as a footballer or as a person (name one who is) but geez this kid can seriously play. Over the ground, in the air, lightning quick, highly skilled on both sides and hard as nails. He can also play forward, defence and mid, fully fit. Oh and he's already kicked four in a game so he has an eye for goal.

Stacky was born to play football.

Who wants to see him fail and go back to who knows what. Mediocrity? Worse. We've seen those stories too often before...

I love that our club has stuck by him all the way. He may fail but he shouldn't fail because we didn't give him every chance. He's a top 5 pick type player sitting in our twos. Let that sink in.

Surely, after three flags in four years and gearing up to go again this year, we have the luxury of all the patience in the world to help Sydney Stack reach his full potential.

Like creating a diamond, it can take a few (thousand) years. But you have to leave no stone unturned and take the time to polish him into an absolute gem.

Haven’t heard that they are doing that this year. Our boys are in Sydney but not sure if the full squad is??
Hopefully we might get some answers Friday as to when the competition can start again
Yes it was reported the full (fit) squad went to Sydney.

Not quite, Lynch is back in Melbourne doing rehab, obviously Soldo would be too, but possible that Nank and other mid-long term injury players are as well

Saw Nank in the surf on the news. Expect it wasn't Pt Melb. Bit further north.

I guess coaches and list managers will balance the potential of the player, with what they are doing on the field now. Unfortunately COVID is mucking up the fringe players and their opportunity to play high level football. The beauty of Stack compared to say Ross is that he has played well in multiple positions.
I wouldn't be averse to giving him another contact. Don't think I'd get into any bidding wars though.

I like the idea of keeping a few guys like Stack on our list - the rough diamonds who could be anything - they are worth the risk and makes good moneyball sense.

As long as these guys are rounded out by good leaders, culture and a solid core of team-first citizens I think we have as a good a chance as anyone of bringing out their best

very nicely put, Dusty, shai and stacky are the most talented players at our club........make no mistake stack is in that group talent wise. He just needs to work hard at his craft......... the light has been lit and road has been shown by a couple of brilliant role models.

Stack has potential to be an absolute jet if he really wants to

Well its nearly 3 months since he arrived back at the club , Another 4-5 weeks and he should be at his playing fitness level
players like stack dont take long to get their touch back so we should see him in the side by round 16/17 if he has been doing everything right

If he doesnt make the team - Goneski

We will give him another year even if he doesn’t play a game this year
We know how good he can be

that’s why I asked the question earlier about the VFL. These guys need to be playing

Its such a crap situation for these blokes currently on the fringe

Another situation where the restrictions give some teams an advantage. Last season the Bears played almost excusively home games for the season. Now their VFL team, Swans and the Suns are playing where Vic teams can't. I believe training for Vic teams from next week?

Stack has all the skills and ability but still not sure if he works hard enough when we need him too.

Not sold on him yet

Can’t be any worse than Edwards and Cotchin. Both looked flat.
lets get serious here...if stack gets a game next week, its gifted and if a runner goes down early stack becomes a liabity in the second half due to his lack of fitness and match conditioning, i can't see stack anywhere near it until he tears it up at next level down. if parker is afl ready surely he gets a look before stacky or MRJ.

don't think stack plays next week, but he should be close by now
