Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

Rioli gets a lot more opportunities than Stack because he works a lot harder than Stack. He doesn't come back to preseason out of shape every year.

Stack might be super talented, but he still has to earn his spot in the team, otherwise what message does that send to everyone else?

A better message than being allowed to perform like absolute rubbish and still get a game like Rioli has.

How many players haven’t played VFL since the end of the 2017 season after previously playing well?

Graham Pickett Nankervis Baker Bolton Broad McIntosh Balta Butler Higgins Ellis Castagna have all done time there if I recall correctly.

About the only ones I can think who haven’t been placed in the VFL team at some point: Martin, Cotchin, Riewoldt, Lynch, Lambert, Vlastuin, Prestia, Grimes, Houli, Edwards, in other words likely our top 10 or so players on the payroll.

Pretty sure Short and Astbury have done some VFL time or scratch match time since then.

Rioli when fit has only been omitted based on performance for a handful of games. Since returning to the team mid season in 2018 after a long and serious injury, he has been left out of the team 9 times including injury, soreness, re-positioning to the backline and being omitted. He has probably been genuinely dropped for a total of 3-4 games and has been selected in every final. 3-4 games and no finals out of 80 odd games including 9 finals doesn’t exactly support your point, in fact it shows the selectors have a lot of faith in Dan Rioli.

Misguided faith

I don’t get your problem with DR. He didn’t have a great game v the Blues but did some nice things. He has put in 2 decent games since. Has 3 goal assists off half back for the season, at least a couple of which were brilliant passes. Has had a couple of matches in succession around 20 disposals, he is taking marks and getting good tackles for a half back. He’s picked up 7 contested possessions each of the last 2 weeks, handy metres gained and decent score involvements. Healthy looking amount of intercept possessions.

What exactly do you expect from him?

His purely defensive numbers (defensive contests won, tackles, tackles ID50, pressure acts etc.) are actually better than Tom Stewart's.

Not suggesting he's played better or is a better player, because Stewart has the intercept marking string to his bow which Rioli doesn't, but defensively he's been perfectly acceptable and there's still room for improvement as he gains experience in the role.

It’s frustrating that they have moved others around and out of the team to find Daniel a spot down back because he couldn’t get near up forward.

I think it’s about trying to get the best out of players and also better the team. Pies could have left Moore forward but gee he looks good in defence. Paddy Mc looking good for swans in defence. Plenty of examples to prove why teams do it.

IMO stacks debut year off no pre season is better than anything rioli has produced. Mind you he hasn’t been afforded the endless opportunities rioli has either- some of his own doing of course.
Is that logic easy enough for you to digest?

Sorry but that logic is just ridiculous.
Hasn’t been afforded the endless opportunities-some his own doing…what?
How can you bag one bloke for getting opportunities when the other one has cost himself opportunities. You realise Stack would be in the 22 if it wasn’t for his own inability to be professional.
They’re all talented mate, but that’s only half the battle.

Love Stacky so much ability but brain is just not there. The stories of why all other clubs wouldn't touch him were true and have been proven. Instead of tigers talking about him for generations to come, he'll be talked about the Relton Roberts way.

That doesn't mean he is not playing well as a half back. Some credit where credit is due, it is not his fault that he has taken the spot of other potential half backs. If he loses form then the criticism is warranted. If Mansell keeps getting better, then he will get his turn soon enough.

Stack's thread was started in Nov 2018 and is 242 pages long, while our 3-time premiership captain's thread was started in 2012 and is 187 pages long!

Now there's a stat for ya. 🤣
and there's another thread that's 95% about him that's over 200 pages long...

I missed the game

Just watching rioli play for wc now. Unfit but opponents know he's there cause he hits hard

Dangerous cause he always threatens to kick a goal.

Stack could be that weapon for us.

I really hope he gets a shot at it soon

Stack has the class to be a weapon anywhere on the field.

Yes Rioli was really rubbish tonight and Stack was superb in the reserves wasn’t he ? I would love to see Stack burn it up as he is super talented but it just isn’t clicking at the moment.

Stack is a seniors player, he lifts on the big stage. I don't think he can shine in the reserves as well as seniours. Look at his form late last year.
