Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

Stack is a seniors player, he lifts on the big stage. I don't think he can shine in the reserves as well as seniours. Look at his form late last year.
That may well be the case but he has to show more than he did today to earn that opportunity.

Doesnt deserve it

has done SFA in the magoo's

I would rather give Juddy a game
thats what i mean, the magoos is not for him. as crazy as that sounds, its reading the player. give him faith and he will repay. we have lots of players not players upto to par over the last two years.

Dont give him anything until he earns it and if he doesnt then delist him

Been given enough already and just takes the piss , He should have been in the seniors by now if he worked hard enough as he has the talent but he just wants to cruise and be "given' games

If he had worked for it he would be there already

nope you have that wrong.....dont make me bring up players who are less deserving than him.

My call is........(and I've been right about a lot of things so far) one big example is rioli........how good is he playing now is his new position?
I was saying this two ago.....

anyway. Stack needs the big stage, that is where he performs. The coaching staff challenge is how to get him there. he is unlike any player on our list so if we are going to be inclusive then we need as a team to figure out how we are going to make that happen.

Did you watch the magoos yesterday?

I get your theory, but he has failed plenty of times in the firsts just like he did yesterday, so automatically elevating him won't magically change his performance, but it will piss off the wider playing group for giving him a game on no merit.

Didn't watch the game but will do. Just from the highlights he seemed to be enjoying himself. Was quick to get over to players and congratulate them when they did something good, the reaction from Clarke and Stack after a goal was not of a player who was miffed about not playing seniors. His attitude seemed good, I guess I will find out more after watching the replay, but it should only be a matter of time before he starts running into form. Still think he should be up the ground, even as a high half forward ala Lambert and Graham. Seems to be stationed very deep which is a player killer of a position.

Got me stumped what fans actually watch sometimes. Stack was essentially playing the role of a full forward yesterday, his job was more or less to bring the ball to ground and compete from there which we did very well in the second half. Terrible way of having to use him and doesn't at all help the outlook on his game but from a coaching point you can't complain given the role they asked of him.

Same thing with RCD who attended centre bounces and proceeded to push forward from there. Was only in the last quarter that he played a genuine midfielders role and ended up with 5 or 6 touches for quarter.

nope didn't watch the game, sometimes I do but been missing of late.. as I said plenty of players have got a game without much merit. I just believe he has the X factor that Bolton and martin have and we need to find a way of getting him up.

Sonsie. MRJ. Rcd. Nyuon. Clarke. Etc.

Might play better with afl team mates than vfl too

He might need the big stage but he has had many chances at it since his initial run of games in 2019. He's played 16 games over the last 2 years, most of them pretty average.

Perhaps the new coach has NFI. We have certainly had some very good VFL coaches before him. Could this be an issue going forward. I certainly never rated him as a player, but doesn't mean he can't coach. What you're describing sounds weird. You'd hope though he is being given strict instructions from the seniors player development team (midfield coaches) on where and how they want them played and developed in the VFL for the step up to the seniors.

We grew up with the race caller Clem Dimsey, known as the great preserver for his habit of saying “this one will keep” when a horse didn’t get a clear run but was hitting the line well.

Stack will keep. We just need to be patient. He will get better and things will open up for him one way or another. Along with bolt squared, Balta and Bolton, Stack is one of the players who could win you a final out of turn if you get the best out of them. If we don’t make it without him we weren’t winning it anyway. If we can get into the frame without him, then he could make a big difference. But it doesn’t have to happen next week or by rd 10 or even rd 15. He just has to be right at the right end of the year. I think he will be, and I am looking forward to that. He will be a 22 yo come finals time and a 40+ gamer hopefully. And if things unfold the right way, then look out. 😁

How would you like to have to play on him in a final in front of 90 thousand?

Mrj been emerg 3 x that tells me he’s closer

He was away from the group for the entire week so that’s maybe why he was given a different simplified role for the weekends game. Quiet first half but was a lot more involved in the second half and seems to be in good spirits like another poster mentioned. I don’t think he’s far off tbh

What a load of bullshit he blitzed last year and was in our best every game whilst plenty of our guns spudded it up.

Plenty of posts about Rioli in this thread. On current form Rioli is not going anywhere.
With Vlas and Lambert locks to come back in as soon as fit and Sonsie looking likely to get a crack at some point, I’d say we will be waiting a while before Stack gets a look at a senior game.

Nice selection problem to have with that sort of talent on standby.

I think they are trying to develop another side of his game so that when he plays midfield in the seniors he has somewhere else to rotate. Prestia would be the only mid we have that has no other role, Cotchin, but he can go forward.

Difficult to come into a side with so many players that rotate through the midfield and be a permanent mid. Half forward is his obvious second position. He is tall enough to present a difficult match up if he leads to the ball and big and strong enough to be a problem when the ball hits the deck. It's a long term thing with him, so I hope he plays that role more, after all that is what the VFL is for, training up players so they fit into the AFL side.

Selfish play in the 2nd i think.
Marked it outside 50.Had a player 20 mthrs further up.Ignored.Went for goal.Came up short as expected.
Said at the time career ending(Bit overboard i think.lol) but wouldn't have went down well with the coaches.

Watching the VFL game now some strange positioning. Why is Stack being played predominantly deep forward? Both he and Cumberland are only forward when players like Street are running through the midfield. Surely both Stack and Cumberland are both potential midfielder/utilities at the next level.

A young kid like Austin Jones comes in and is given the freedom to run a wing (I think, but he is around the ball a lot). Why aren't Stack and Cumberland give some time up the ground. Are they seriously trying to develop Stack as a small forward when blind Freddy can see that he needs to run straight lines so he can use his pace and weave and kick. Stack is a beautiful mover and user of the ball. He is no small forward, although he can be thrown there when we need a spark like he has done previously. He must be as frustrated as hell.
