Was one of our most exciting players on the list with one of the highest ceilings. Why didnt we play him this year? How many games did aarts get in front of him?
Yep, but there must be reasons why the coaches didn’t select him. I’m pretty devastated he’s gone but I’m sure there’s valid reasons why. Even the Freo List Manager is expressing reservations

You seem to be consistently missing the point, it was never about talent it’s about attitude and what he does when it isn’t gameday

We celebrate our culture of success but that also means players need to do the hard yards
What type of standard does it set if you have players not training and preparing properly and they still get games? It creates rifts in the playing group and ultimately undermines the hard work everyone else does and becomes toxic

Aarts, for all his limitations, at least worked his arse off and that's why he was rewarded.
Absolutely phenomenal effort for him to play 42 senior games for a club that that been contending.
He got 42 games out of himself and became one of the VFL competition's best players.
all through hard work.
Stack was the complete opposite.

this is exactly right

Well done to Aarts got everything out of himself

His stay in prison was not for a great crime. He's not a crim. It was ridiculous to jail him for that.
In fact it was a disgrace. He was put in jail basically "because he has nowhere else to go" and to " teach him a lesson". Disgusting, old colonial attitude to a young black man who needed guidance and counselling and direction at the time.

Anyway, we keep jailing young black men, some of them deserved no doubt for serious crimes but many of them "because they have nowhere else to go" and to "teach them a lesson" and they keep dying in jail on an all too regular basis.

Didn't mean to derail the thread but the rate of incarceration for indigenous peoples is ridiculously high and incredibly damaging to our society as a whole. Sydney Stack being jailed for what was arguably something beyond his control and when bail was the obvious option still annoys the hell out of me.

What "lesson" did he learn from that I wonder...

Low key still no over us wasting a spot on Matt Parker the last two seasons when we could have picked up Stengle.

Never had any issues at least publicly whilst he was with us and only left for more opportunity.
Matty Parker had the mongrel & athleticism, but clearly not skills. MRJ & Cumbo have both almost cemented themselves in the 22. MRJ massive trajectory up. The selectors doing a good job now that George & Ivan are out of favour. Gibcus could've been rested but Miller has been a revelation. I'll complain again with Cotch playing like crap to get to 300.

Stengle can play but we have excess depth of small fwds/small backs so Geelong was a better fit than us. Kudos to everyone in Stengle's transformation.

Stack's the perfect rookie candidate, isn't he? Huge upside but with work to do. I'd rather rookie him than some random undrafted kid with the same sort of problems.
I'd rookie RCD. Just felt its taken this long to develop physically. He may not get a AFL game..
Stack's our of favour ~ got played one game up fwd. This one year contract was obviously off the back of all the troubles. It felt like reluctance to give him a contract and he played a season of VFL.

Better for SS to move clubs

The carry on in here is ridiculous. You'd think we just delisted Dustin Martin.
If you couldn't see this coming then I dont know what you were looking at.

Looking forward to drafting a kid that actually is serious about their footy and will give us actual depth, not just wasting their talent away in the magoos.

Well said!

I reckon most likely because his VFL form was more patchy than a dogs back with alopecia. Stack got as many games as he deserved

So after 291 epic pages of discussion/insults/circle jerks/speculation about a 35-game player, the enigma is finally delisted.
Hopefully the speculation about his poor off-field attitude is correct and he wasn't poorly managed or misjudged.
I know Balmy would rave about him whenever he was asked.

I always said, and still say he is a player that needs stability and a simple task to keep him grounded. That came in the form of guarding someone in the backline and using his immense talents and creativity from within that role to make a large impact on the game.

I truly hope he finds the right club or attitude for his sake and ours, he was one hell of a player to watch when in full flight.

That's the thing ... we laud our culture and environment and how we give everyone the best shot at making it.
Honestly, Geelong seems to do likewise.
So, I don't get where Stack is going to come back to bite us.
Fancy stepping into a culture like St Kilda, Essendon, Adelaide, West Coast, GWS??? He ain't going to magically thrive.
I dare say (I sound like John Northey .. I dare say) we've given our best with Stack and gone above and beyond. In the end, it comes down to him.
I wanted to see him play more than anyone this year, especially while Castagna and Aarts were spudding it up and Edwards couldn't get near it for most of the year, but it can't all be bad luck or even a majority of bad luck. (and he would have been more impactful than all three).
There's something that held him back and in the end, I'm more certain than not it was himself.

Well he wasn't a forward was he. If they had given him more than one quarter for an entire season in his natural position things might be different.

Blind Freddy could see this happening (delisting) 3/4 through the season. Such is life.

He was a decent forward in his first year where he got runner up in the Rising Star....

The Stack defenders have made so many excuses for him. Maybe now he can spend more time on his aspiring Tick-Toc career

Yup, 100% on the same page
If our environment wasn’t one that could help develop Stack I don’t think many other clubs would be able to either,

I understand the disappointment because like everyone else we all wanted him to make it just due to that amazing talent he has but ultimately if he can’t transition into being a professional sportsman and everything that encompasses it’s actually doing more harm than good keeping him around both for stack as an individual and the list and a team as a whole

I still hope he can make it, even if he needs to put his dead down and earn a spot again but if he can’t sort out the professional side I’m sure there are plenty of state league/local clubs willing to have him train once a week and star on the weekend for some decent cash

Yes when running hot off the half back in his first season he could do no wrong, in great form he could do anything.

So when that great form didn't arise half way through a VFL year, what about the novelty of putting him in a spot where he could find that form.
He played one Q in the VFL at half back, and looked a completely different player. Next Q back forward again.

Most bizarre use of a talented footballer I've ever seen pretty much, and I'm an old campaigner. Glad he is gone, can enjoy my footy again.
