Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

He's been back since about the 15th of May. Even if the 14 day thing isn't bulletproof, I'm not sure that 35 days for a low level irregularity to show on the test is very likely.

You'll need to let the president down lighter than that if you want to work in this town again.

If he's actually broken AFL protocols then he should face a hefty suspension. He's put the well-being of his teammates and the livelihoods of a lot of players at risk.

Why the hell did we have all the defenders training indoors together too, by the way? Can we do literally anything right?
I keep hearing how he should face a hefty suspension but I disagree entirely.

Why wouldn’t he get exactly the same suspension that Zerk-Thatcher and that other batch of players faced — ie one to two games. They broke similar rules and it’s absolute chance that McKenna got sick and they didn’t.

Robbo saying that McKenna visited his family on Friday. So the only issue is the house inspection on the potential cause?

Looking more likely that McKenna didn’t breach anything.
Shocked to be sitting here!

I mean, with some of the media, most oppo supporters (and some of our own) wanting to hang him and painting him as the devil reincarnated without having all of the facts, I was sure he was guilty and should be deported immediately.

I figure if the AFL had clear evidence that he broke the rules, they would act immediately and hand out a suspension.

To set an example for other players who are thinking about putting themselves and their teammates at risk. But it sounds like he hasn't broken any of the protocols so might be a moot discussion.

Sorry. Cannot take this from David King of all people:

How this guy can pontificate about breaking the rules and look himself in the mirror is beyond me...

Wayne Carey been moralising about it as well?

This attitude towards Mckenna that has crept in is that this is what happens when you break the rules and you've threatened the entire AFL world with your irresponsibility. You've played Russian roulette with everyone's lives.

The fact remains that even if every AFL player broke every protocol the chances of any player acquiring this virus is incredibly remote.

Breaking an AFL rule (if he has) is so petty when compared to the effect that it will have on him personally and the almost impossibility of acquiring this in the community needs to be emphasized more.

This is an example of what I hate about the AFL now. Why should he be punished any more severely than those who did the same sort of breaches but didn’t catch it? Seems just an absurd bit of, dare I say it, victim blaming.

The only thing that would deserve a ton of bricks is if he knew he’d tested positive and still went in with life
Wilson going with a suspension not too disimilar to BZT and Wines, due to the grey area around rules for moving house: that house inspections were okay. Only difference is Connor wasn't selling.

In any case - the number of players exposed - and if it involved all the backs - isn't the player's responsiblity if there is an AFL protocol in place to say lines shouldn't train together
True that. Should be a club fine and the coaches given a razzing. I thought they had someone overseeing this stuff after the Adelaide stuff up in the Barossa Valley.

AFL always been a results based punisher

bump a bloke and he gets up and walks off - 0 weeks
bump a bloke with the same bump and he breaks his jaw - 5 weeks

go out to visit a mate during covid, test negative - 1 week
go out to a house viewing, test positive - life no parole!!!
The club is backing him. This could get interesting.

That sent a shivver up my spine, 2015 all over again
No surprises that the AFL has tightened up the rules on family visits subsequent to Conor’s test.
It would be good if someone could post the rules imposed on the players along with more information on what Conor has done to break them. It is all just a little bit too grey at the minute.

I just want it to go down the rabbit hole so I can hear caro say 'salacious' again, it's my favourite thing

If it's the open house thing, he should get a week or two, similar to BZT / Wines / Pickett / Spargo. He'd have be allowed to do it if he was selling, but because he's renting it's grey.

That he happened to pick up the virus is really dumb luck, I can almost guarantee you there's AFL players sneaking in / out to sleep around which is much more clearly a breach than attending an open house.

The grandstanding from other clubs' supporters that their players are somehow flawlessly adhering to the restrictions is moronic.

Consider the saga never happened...

The derision toward us wouldn't be happening now, this would be just an issue part and parcel of "these uncertain times...new normal blah blah"

Add our recent record to the mix and it's just another nail in the coffin of the cheats.

It's tough to shake (and so it should be)

Yeah I disagree with this. We’ve been hated for a long time, sure the vitriol went up with the whole shitshow (in fairness so did our persecution complex) but they’d still be piling in. It’s one of the joys of being big and historically successful

In a nutshell mate. It'll be our lot for a very long time.

Nah, we dragged the league through the mud, partly due to the AFL's own actions but the cause was ultimately us. People have long memories and now any time anything bad happens involving Essendon, especially if it impacts other clubs or the league, the "typical, ****ing Essendon" responses start to flow.
