AFL Player 45: Tom Edwards

List spots will be tight. He's coming from a long way back fitness wise and he'll be 26 by the time he plays again. This is a quintessential Dodoro type move.
There’s plenty of other candidates for delisting/retirement/trading that I don’t think Edwards was in any danger.

I disagree. The only one I have clearly ahead is Lual, with a likely Goldstein retirement. The rest are either 50/50 or clearly not behind him.
Novak doesn’t eat gluten and he’s done alright.
Much like most things, there are different levels for these things. It's been documented how he's behind others in this regard.

List spots in general are tight. As far as the rookie list goes we already have SEH, Visentini, Edwards (now confirmed) and ADW all a good chance of being there next year. Then you likely have a couple of MSD picks, bam there's 6 for next year and we're at capacity unless someone gets delisted or upgraded at the ND.

It's a hasty decision for a mature aged recruit whose fitness base is lower than most mature aged picks due to being coeliac, will be 26 before he plays AFL again and is coming off an ACL.
I think this is the key reason they should have waited. We could unearth a player or three that we prefer to keep on the list.

I like the support the club is showing Tom by re-signing him, that feels like the right-thing-to-do… But my head says it’s time to be ruthless with list spots and injuries.

For those who don't read the VFL thread, he's probably been second best on ground behind Robey 10 mins into the 4th.

Looks a cut above the level.
Makes you think maybe there was a reason they signed him early after his acl injury when most of us questioned why we hung onto him. Hopefully he can do his stuff at afl level too.

I think Edwards has more upside than MacMahon. Mobile, tough and strong hands, and an equally reliable shot on goal.
McMahon is unfortunately a one trick pony. Edwards’ game is more like Langford and Gunston, whose names should probably not be uttered in the same sentence I guess. But you know what I mean.
