AFL Player 45: Tom Edwards

Never not kicked multiple goals except for a game where he did his ACL in the first 5 mins > wing > half back line > dropped.

Absolutely baffling that Scott thought it was worth bringing Perkins in for him. Or keeping Langford in for that matter unless the plan is to put Langford down back again.

The reason is simple. We desperately need someone on wing who can take a mark.
Did not work and cost us today but we are at a stage where we do need to try things.
Insanity will be going back to the same well too many times.
Day-Wicks and Durham can both do this, both run all day and both will defend their wing. I'd have them on rotation.

Playing him out of position and then dropping him when he doesn't perform there, righto. Over to you Nguyen in the ruck, you better perform or you're gonski!
Interesting way to go about saving your coaching career... play people out of position, then move them all back a few weeks later and look like a genius.

Edwards competes Cox barely does. Had 1 down game last week but also played out of position.

Be interested to see if he plays less minutes in the vfl as a rest after a few games when coming back from a acl, I dont mind but he didn't deserve to be dropped.

Like Nguyen, Edwards plays like a bloke desperate for an AFL career. Perkins shouldn’t be picked ahead of him until he shows the same.

I think Perkins is picked because we want someone at stoppage to assist

People are already saying were too tall and big

It would need to be Edwards over either Bryan, Cox or AMay

He was also be of the worst offenders as far as forward pressure / defence and his confidence looked a bit down.
Maybe just hitting a little flat spot in form.

Think its as simple as we rate A.May more and hes a big guy down the line compared to Edwards, who is Nik Cox in the forward line, albeit both can coexist there

I love his competitiveness, speed and ability to get the ball to ground when out of position. I think he could be a find

I reckon he is a good tackler and seems to apply decent pressure.

The basic question is will it hurt Edwards long term?
No.
He came up against a side he knew would restrict our kick mark game so he looked for an option on the wing that could help.
It didn’t work but it is not simply bad thinking.
Edwards out of the Forward line didn’t cost us 14 goals.
You try and find solutions.
Edwards will be fine.
People are carrying on like we have wrecked the bloke and cost us a top 4 spot.
Rebuilding is about finding out shot. Like Roberts in the midfield. Did not work so moved him back. Still have a midfield issue. They tried to add hard nut.
I hope they keep looking at options.
God knows we need them.

On the day you could tell they moved him on the wing as an outlet from half back - Probably because they knew Brisbane would be able to suffocate our ball movement.
One of the problems we seem to have is any time we play a tall winger they don’t tend to take many marks (Contested or otherwise) and we’ve tried a few in Cox, Jones and now Edwards.
They are all slight of body, but their height should see them able to out mark someone shorter than them.
Obviously not though…

TBH….i don’t really care about structures.

Find me 23 blokes who’ll put their head over the footy and run themselves ragged every week….then I’ll worry about structures.

Edwards plays like he cares, Perkins does not.

Perkins has cared the last 3 weeks

He may well be knowing his career is on the line, hes been excellent and looked a different player

Remember he had no PS, so theyve pushed him back to get the touch and run in his legs

I hope it transitions to AFL, but for that to occur, he needs 40% cbas because his 70% over the last 3 VFL have been the best ive ever seen him

Let’s see.

I’m just not sure he’s hardwired with the competitive instinct you need for AFL. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

Perkins really wasn’t that impressive in the VFL. He has more natural ability than most at that level but he shows the same faults that has shown at AFL level. Has he gained confidence by touching the ball a bit more? Maybe, but I’m not holding my breath waiting for him to suddenly become a contributor when the heat and pace ramp up again.
