Player Watch #45: Zac 'Banga' Banch - set to debut vs Sydney

I think he'll be an upgrade on Konstanty.

Konstanty's value to the team is what he does without the ball with his pressure. Banch offers that but is better and cleaner with ball in hand.

I'm absolutely convinced we need both to be playing in the same side.
Does this make the RHJ extension odd then?

We've won 2 games. Finding blokes to make way really shouldn't be an issue.

2. North Melbourne - Zac Banch
175cm, 21/01/2003, Werribee

The Roos were looking at talls but ended up selecting a small forward with the No.2 pick. Banch has kicked 8.8 and averaged 16 disposals from his past five VFL games – has speed and power to his game. The 2024 VFL premiership player was a standout across last season, he can kick long goals, and also hits bodies with great forward pressure inside-50. Banch booted three goals against Sydney and then three the following week against Williamstown early in the year to get scouts watching him

Thanks mate.

Payne is the slowest of burns right now, but I like him and think there's something there. The problem is you can only support so many small pressure forwards who don't also provide something else such as using the footy well, kicking goals or being flexible in terms of the role you can perform. Payne and Konstanty in many ways are currently offering similar things - they're basically pressure forwards with not a lot else - this is still valuable, but you can't have two of those in the same side. Banch at least has the ability to play higher up the field and uses it well by foot.

It's odd as Payne was finding it 25+ times a game and hitting the scoreboard before being drafted as a mid-forward, but it seems we've got a pretty set hierarchy when it comes to midfield minutes. It could be we don't think he has the tank, or we're dogged about him being a small forward and nothing else.
Payne's got a decent set of mitts on him when the ball comes his way. Agree he still doesn't find it enough though

We were assured at the time that 'he just looks like that' and after a year I think I can safely say that this is indeed the case.
We draft Jason #1 - comms failure as he sits looking about as excited someone waiting for a train to go between 2 city loop stations

We draft Geordie #1 - first player ever to cover their face and hide after being drafted

I can't recall Jacob Edward's facial expression when he was drafted. He was wearing a Guy Fawkes mask to hide his reaction.

Probably a good thing we offloaded a potential #1 pick this year. Poor kid would've leapt of a window Simpson's style if we took him.
