the gap to campaign on is the canberra sensible centre. But traditionally, the Primaries are about shifting that overton window to the poles opposite to the alternative party.
But Trump put a glitch in this system, and undermined such a strategy, you cant beat Trump with an extreme position, you beat him by adopting a legitimate position, across the centrist tract in the Primaries, well before the general election... you cant have bankers and then have OccupyWallStreet in your political constituency claim. Such manifest contradictions wont work. Sanders and Bloomberg would have worked if they could get votes in the centre of the country, the ones that the Dems had neglected for JP Morgan Jamie Dimon donations
