I made it clear that I think a high percentage do join because of no other path forward. I think I was crystal clear in that. I'm sure pilots, engineers and doctors in the army are quite intelligent.

I'm studying commerce at UniMelb, which I've stated on here before. Are you finished getting so riled up now?

I apologise if I've offended you with my anti-military opinions. I guess it's hard to respect a collective when they've been involved in destroying the Middle-East over the past couple of decades.

There's no requirement for me to be sycophantic and pretend that I care about our army or ANZAC Day etc.

Now, moving on, because this argument is derailing this thread.
I think it's probably important to de-couple criticism of military policies from the involvement of individuals in the military, who can join up for a myriad of reasons.

I would actually agree with that if our soldiers were actually involved in saving our lives.

They spend their time in the Middle-East etc. That has absolutely nothing to do with protecting us. It's been 70 odd years since Australia was even sort of attacked by Japan.

You should go to the police thread where people are attacking the police constantly and say the same thing as this :)
I believe the army is often called in to help in certain circumstances, i.e. floods, bush fires, etc. They're not only here to spend time in the Middle East.

But we're getting way off topic here, so that's all from me on the subject.

Wow, I think I made it clear that I made provisions for doctors, engineers and pilots etc.

Sure, why not?

Class goes back next week, when are you free?

The stupidity of a uni student calling anyone who serves an incompetent loser with limited career opportunities is not lost on me!

Here's a hint, many people serve in the ADF that are professionals with trades, degrees, that are engineers, pilots, vessel navigators/watchkeepers etc, that have done more and experienced more than you'll ever experience.

When im back in the country we can catch up and I'ii be sure to give you an attitude adjustment.

I'd say a reasonably high percentage.

People like Malifice are probably the exception rather than the rule.

I think Gough put it well, the army takes in those that are too dumb to pass the police testing.
We had 40 potential applicants for enttry the day I enlisted. Two got through. I was one of them.

Between the medical testing, psych testing, and psych eval it's not easy getting into the Army.

Provided that 'attitude adjustment' remark wasn't a threat, yeah, I'd be happy to do so.

I doubt you'll change my opinion on our army being involved in unnecessary conflicts that often make things worse worldwide, but the rest of what you've said, sure.

Send me a PM when you are.

Yep I have some friends in the services (Navy and Air-force) who have been involved in disaster assistance in Australia and oversees. They've also been involved in peacekeeping duties around the world and stood between potential victims and armed thugs wanting to murder them.

But hey according to herculez09 they only joined due to being an incompetent loser with limited career career opportunities.

Its now a verification of experience before be offered a YOU Session, then another 2nd full day assessment, and then if you are becoming an officer, you have to sit an Officer Selection Board before you even get sent to your initial training.

Worth reading that transcript to reinforce how dumb the orange turd is - does he expect anybody to believe that he and Putin were just two cuddly bears in the 1 : 1 discussing Russian adoption :(
Oh ....and that was what the Russian lawyer wanted to discuss with Jnr as well - what a coincidence , must be the hottest topic in Russia at the moment - spare me pleeze
Trump is not only a hopeless liar but the narcissism in him wants to reveal that he knows everything in his universe - these are mutually exclusive and will play heavily in his downfall

Just trying to post Trumps pre-election stance on Syria, as you didnt do it.

If you dont think Assad should be removed, either by outside influences or internal is disturbing
I support him-- you know, the secular guy that isn't forcing women to cover up & banning them from driving-- over Islamic terrorists. Half of which don't give a shirt about the country & are only there because they want a caliphate & have been bankrolled by countries that want Syria ground into dust (Saudi Arabia, Israel, pre Trump U.S) because that's a result that weakens Iran. And your post just backed up exactly what I said- that pre-election Trump claimed to wanna focus on Isis rather than employ subversive tactics (like Obama) or intervene directly (like Hilary would have) against Assad.

It's not so simple - Syria is a mess and Assad is an active supporter of Hezbollah, hence the Iranian support. The disparate groups of allies fighting Assad will no doubt be enemies if Assad was defeated so this point is not intended as a measure of support for Assad's enemies either.

Can any of the Trump supporters here defend even one of Trumps answers below as both presidential, and not the rantings of a borderline idiot?

How far the US has fallen in replacing the intelligent, sensitive, sophisticated president in Obama with this raving loony.

Same, I joined the Navy, which BTW is the senior service ;) , and plenty of blokes never made after physical and mental testing.

I didn't join as a officer cadet but just general entry and I know a few blokes who went through from general entry to becoming an officer, the training is also depending on what you do pretty intensive, I worked on radars and graph plotting which required a pretty good knowledge of maths and the end result is a career outside as a air traffic controller.

Besides what job you actually do, you require good knowledge in general seamanship, firearms, fire control etc etc.

It's harder than what is seems.

Not perfect, but I'll take Lebanese *nationalist* Shia's, backed by Christians, with clearly defined goals (re-take territory lost to the Israeli *invasion*) over Wahhabi monsters any day of the week. If Assad staying in results in a strengthened Hezbollah so be it; it's the lesser evil.

Whabbists are horrible, agree.
The US is all-in on the Sunni train and Israel holds a lot of sway in the US capital so the ideological US opposition to all and anything Shia is unlikely to change anytime soon. Either way it's a shitstorm, the winner is likely to be the "slightly less bad" group who will no doubt find some other state/ideology to continue to wage violence against.

According to a discussion between journos on npr, "russian adoption" is the code for "sanctions".

The adoption ban was 100%/in response to the sanctions, so discussing adoption is a way of discussing sanctions being lifted without saying youare discussing lifting sanctions

We've gone from "Trump had a secret convo with Putin where only the 2 of them and a Russian translator were present" to "Trump had a chat with Putin at a G20 dinner with everyone else present - but it's still suspicious!!"

Gotta love the ole 4:05!

It's straight from the NYT transcript of their discussion with him. The whitehouse isn't going to pretend this is fake news as it there were several people present and it would have been recorded as it was on the record.

So please address the question
