Callum Brown becomes the first GIANTS mens player to be directly recruited from Ireland.
The GIANTS have welcomed Irish recruit Callum Brown to the club as a rookie for the 2019 season.

Brown is an up-and-coming Gaelic Football star in his home country and is a tall, skillful and athletic prospect.

The 18-year-old was identified by the GIANTS’ Irish scouting program in July 2017 and undertook a 12-month trial process with the club.

He flew to Australia in August to spend two weeks training with the GIANTS under the eye of coach Leon Cameron.

Brown is an Ulster Minor Championship winner and All-Ireland finalist with Derry last year who also won provincial with the Oak Leaf U20 side this season.

GIANTS List Manager Jason McCartney said Brown showed plenty of promise.

“Callum really impressed when he spent time at the club earlier this year,” McCartney said.

“He’s an incredibly athletic and skillful player and showed an ability to pick up the nuances of AFL footy during some intensive training sessions.

“We know it takes some time to adapt to our game and we won’t put any pressure on him but as an 18-year-old, he’s a really exciting prospect.”

Brown will move to Australia next month to begin training with the first-to-fourth year players when they return to the club on November 19.

Irish players can be signed directly to a club’s Rookie List under the International Player Rule and do not have to go through the draft.

Brown certainly has something about him that screams out STAR! I guess consistency is the key, so seeing him play over a whole game rather than just the occasional flash of brilliance is the next step, and one he seems to be taking. What do GWS fans think of him and his development?

We've hoped for that "Irish" brilliance - he was a very highly regarded junior in Ireland before coming here. But, it's been there only in flashes. Part of the problem seems to have been what position to make best use of his skills. He's been moved between defence and attack, occasionally on the wing too (preponderance of VFL games, of course). Hopefully, he can now be settled in the forward half, and allow him to get that consistency. His speed works exactly in favour of Adam Kinglsey's desired game style; he can jump and mark, but also gather ground balls, and defend. So he's got the whole package if he can put it all together across a whole season.

Article on Callum Brown before Opening round 2024 ...

OF ALL the individual breakout campaigns in the AFL in 2023, that of Callum Brown's at Greater Western Sydney may well have been the most fascinating of all.

Surrounded at the Giants by a myriad of super-talented, early draft picks, who were all destined for the top from a young age, it was the Irishman who had to learn the game in obscurity in Sydney's west who emerged to make as much of an impression as any, in the club's dramatic ascension to a preliminary final.

On Saturday night at Giants Stadium, the 23-year-old once Gaelic football prodigy will face GWS' preliminary final conquerors in Collingwood again, and play in a season-opener for the first time in his now burgeoning career. It's a prospect that he fails to hide his excitement for in a chat with
AFL.com.au. "It's really exciting because for the last five years I haven't been able to get in the team for the first game of the season," he said.

... and then after he kicked 5 goals in the opening round:
