Lol one game to hit trigger so we drop him. Pretty poor really, feel sorry for him.
It's harsh given the contract circumstances, but he's been garbage both weeks, weak 1 handed attempts just don't cut it.

The other option is Green.

Blight had an in-form campaigner behind him in Young
Frustrated World Cup GIF

I think he’s a classic case of being too good for vfl but not good enough for AFL. His strengths are his marking and aerobic ability. Bloke got super fit to give himself every chance. Everything else is pretty weak imo.

If we have Balta, Miller, Gibcus (big if), Gray, Young and Trainor (not sure he’s a key position or a 3rd tall) I think that’s plenty of depth at the KPD position. Young can be the full time vfl back up, with gray putting pressure on selection to replace any of the other guys. Could see a lineup of

Xxxx - Balta - Gibcus
Trainor - Miller - Banks
I think he’s he’s plenty good enough as a kpd in most sides I think you overestimate what’s around , look at lions tall defenders if I was he I’d knock on their door

They would not touch him. Big , powerful but can't hit targets and takes short steps when facing front on contact. Also slow.
Move him on. Gray is the player we need to get games into.

why?

Devils advocate have not seen Gray do a lot, I have Blight ahead of him personally and Blight can help in the ruck.

nothing against Gray personally but seen nothing to sit up and take notice yet. Frankly more impressed with Blight if anything, I think Blight has upside especially when considering how far Miller has come

my gut feel, and I have no idea as I do not live in Melbourne, some posters must be Melbourne centric and have other reasons apart from pure performance to make various judgements, not most posters but some posters I think

Johno Brown likes to talk up presence. Blight has more presence on the field than Gray or Young or some others IMO, but that is just me.

but the other thing is we have other players in the positions that simply will not cut it when/if we make a GF

The thing for me is someone like Gray and others are a bit in-between and so when developed how much different will they be versus Smillie, or Trainor or a host of others? Gibcus is closer to a Gray than Blight so why would Blight be thought of as one too much especially if he can improve further and is not that old?

Is that unfair on Gray?? possibly because there are other players in other positions not near it at all I think. I think we need to think about reshuffling a bit of our list.

I have said it before, get Bulldogs first and Cooper Hynes. What would it take?? no idea. If Vlastuin is mates with Cody Weightman maybe he is open to winning a premiership at the Bulldogs while we build as he is only 31 and dogs need a lot of help in defence. We help with contract salary and Bulldogs will probably want more meaning???

We have a number of backs and a number of forwards and there are certain types in this years draft and players that have not had a crack yet like Smillie so we could reconstruct our list while still keeping a lot of our players without demolishing it as we have plenty of players that help with spine and other key structural parts apart from others that can help out in a number of positions.

For example we could let Hopper and Taranto go and pick up Greeves and Sharp in the draft. I am not suggesting that necessarily but the point is a number of options are possible where we have cover options for certain scenarios so at the end of the day, down the track we have a better chance to win premierships and more of them over the journey potentially with different and new combinations

We know his gone, but would it not be beneficial to give him a contract and maybe get something for him? If he doesn't have one, we will delist him, which would be another BS move.

You're asking why? Did I not outline why I think Blight is no good?
I'll repeat.
Blight is Big , powerful but can't hit targets and takes short steps when facing front on contact. Also slow. Gray is the player we need to get games into. He's faster than Blight and doesn't take short steps.

short steps is a good thing, makes a player more nimble. Generally long steps mean runs on railroad tracks and big turning arc meaning bad especially for a defender.

pace is not everything either. Not trying to put down Gray but he is not a superstar yet.

you are happy to say Blight is no good. I am happy to say Blight is not no good.

Look at Faull, does not matter who Faull hits on a target if kicking out of defence that much if he is kicking 70 metre balls from 20 metres( top of goal square plus 10 metre run) from our goal line making it a 90 metre transition and who knows who is on the end of that allow for time in the air. All you are saying is Blight might not be the best kicking out all the time, so what, not the end of the world!! It is a team game about how different players gel and compliment each other

I reckon he’s gonna be an absolute star
He’s super athletic, can play anywhere
devils advocate, why is Gray going to be a superstar???

not saying he will or won't be but what is the fascination??

why can he play anywhere??? this is not the olympics we are chasing footballers and athletics is not everything.

the way you write about him why not stick him in the guts and see how he goes in the reserves at least??

Is Gray a jack of all trades master of none?? Not declaring it, just asking the question? what is his one wood?

the way some write he may be more of a flanker and runner than a defender anyway

One thing I will write is Blight and Gray are not apples and apples, so it is not like they are competing for the same roles in my mind

The way some describe Gray is seems he may be more of a running utility, like maybe he could start on a wing??? Like Blight could never start on a wing, very much KPP/ruck chop out

If anything Gray would be competing against Young and others for certain roles I would have thought. The query for Gray is is he too much of a inbetweener?? like is there a role that he can own for sure against any opposition player including different setups??

If a role was going to be picked for Gray is he half forward flank or half back flank?? and then the question would be as part of what player/mix/dynamic in terms of what other players we have or have not around him to make it really work well?

Reason for the Gray love is that I think posters forget how average a player is when they haven’t played AFL seniors for a while. I reckon we need green and smith back in. They’re great.

He’s athletic and proven to play both ends of the ground well in VFL
Could see him on the wing too

still I look at his highlights with a bombers top on.

To me Gray is competing with the likes of Trainor, Young, Smillie and others as well including smaller types for different roles

little to do with Blight.

Just say Vlastuin gets traded out chasing premierships elsewhere maybe Broad to, opportunities pop up for Gray and others??

Blight is more KPP so compared to Gray apples and oranges

Not saying Gray does not have value and potential, just Blight and Gray are not competing for the same roles I do not think really.

I look at Gray's height and some posters think kpp but to me height is a number. The key is how a player moves more so than measurements. Because Gray is slighter I look through a lens of Gray contributing in more mobile capacities. Gray is not Rance in terms of robustness and for KPP to me there is a level of combativeness and competing against a opponent especially in defence when trying to stop goals.

I cannot see Gray as a FB unless on certain types, maybe a CHB at times against certain types as he is taller than Joel Bowden, but it would depend on how well he plays and who is around him complimenting him and how well they play. The other thing is we still have to demystify Smillie and how he is best played so lot of water to go under the bridge yet
