Joel Amartey
Joel Amartey has shown strong form in the ruck and as a key-position player at both ends of the ground since being drafted to the Sydney Swans as a rookie ahead of season 2018. The Ghanaian-Australian produced arguably his best performance of the 2019 season against Sydney University in Round 6, which saw him collect 42 hit-outs and a goal. In season 2020, he made his AFL debut against Brisbane Lions in Round 17 after producing some strong individual performances in scrimmage matches, and impressed with eight hit-outs and two inside 50.

These stats are not brilliant but he was playing as a ruckman for all these games. I don't think he is tall enough to be a full time ruckman at an AFL level though.

He does seem to be athletically gifted though

Really happy with the pick up of Amartey.

He started off the year a bit slowly (as a forward) before coming into his own in the final part of the season as a ruckman. In fact in each of the games he has played predominantly in the ruck he has been named in the best players (Including each game during the finals).

His a bit of an impact player (lacks consistency at times) but generally shows up a few times each game and makes a fair bit of an impact.

Can play up forward and in the ruck, usually uses his athleticism to his advantage and is known to take some pretty big marks. If anything as a ruckman I would probably liken his athleticism and play style to Naitanui (Obviously not as good as his size can hurt him at times)

On the negative side he was the player that missed the shot after the siren in the TAC grand final.

Was really surprised when he wasn't drafted, his raw but with his athleticism I thought he would of been a top 40 pick.

At 196 hes a bit off ruckman height at afl level compared to most current rucks, but is there a chance he still has a few CM's of growth left in him? if not theres every chance he could still be competitive in the ruck with a decent leap on him. Looks like a possible future 2nd ruck/marking forward option.

Also is the Sandrigham coach Ryan Oconnor the same absolutely massive bloke who played a few games for us back in the early 2000's?

Beatson said in an interview today that he is still growing, so another few centimetres is possible, and him getting up to 198cm is just (just) reaching AFL ruckman height.

6 of the top 40 ruckmen this year were <198cm:

Patrick Ryder - 197
Shane Mumford - 197
Drew Petrie - 197
Jackson Trengove - 197
Cam Pederson - 193
Majak Daw - 195

There's a good mix in there. Ryder with exceptional leap and agility, and Mumford with excellent physicality.

Then Petrie and Trengove who play other positions and pinch hit, and Daw who is a horrendous potato.

Not to mention at 18yrs old he's not done growing.

Will be a downer and say don't put too much expectation onto him. He is still a rookie pick and is definitely a project player.

He could be all of those things mentioned in this thread, he could also be an Abe Davis type.
