AFL Player 46: Lachlan Blakiston

At the very minimum he will be a cheap back up who can fill in two spots. Thought he rucked pretty well against DeKoning and Nank the week before. Personally, I have seen enough to say I have no issue with it.
I think he can fill in more than just 2 spots myself.

Easy choice given our two other rucks with one coming off an ACL and the other one is a developing ruck

Pretty happy with this

What’s the need to rush though, or even just offer 1 year. No one is chasing him.

It is called backing your guy. Who says no one is chasing / watching him ?

edit. We thought no one was watching Josh Jenkins either.

Or D’Ambrosio

Once we get Bryan back I’d like to see him up forward instead of Wright. Far better athletic profile, has a competitive edge, would be far better at ground level and pressuring.

Not a bad call.
I like him but the reality is he is really only the third ruck you have on the list to cover injury.
Would certainly have him in the side over Wright.

Super impressed with him last night. A few people wrote him off before the game. I don’t even think he played that bad in the first two games but got exposed imo as a solo ruck. Hawks overworked him with two rucks and I thought he battled his arse off last week. He has a heart the size of Pharlap. I’m actually excited to see him and Bryan in the same team. I would like to see both take a few more marks though.

TBH Blakiston never took many marks for his height, as East Freo's number 1 ruck in the WAFL....his agility, mobility and endurance is what made him an important player for East Freo.....his 2nd & 3rd efforts for his size in the contest are his forte, not his marking at the contest.

that's what was most apparent to me, he just worked over xerri around the ground and did well in the ruck.

Yep fair enough. I only mentioned it because it is a team problem for us. We lose so much territory. Nick Bryan isn’t really reknown for it either. I actually thought Drapes last year started making inroads in that area and before that he wasn’t that great at it. I think it’s one of the reasons we handball to much.

Yep agree. I miss Cale Hooker. We don’t have many players that can take contested marks.

Especially between the arcs.

Yep 100% agree.

I actually think most of our negatives (marking and otherwise), occur between the arcs, as well as inside our forward and defensive 50.

I thought xerri could get 150-200 supercoach points. ended up with only 68.

Maybe McGrath got in his head.

But Blakiston did well on ruck KpIs too and kicked a goal.

while i don't pay too much attention to the supercoach side of AFL, what was noticable was that he was able to match xerri around the ground and was able to play against him physically. xerri isn't a lanky **** either.

I think our main issue beyond what's there was that our tapreading has been shocking this season, maybe it's too telegraphed? maybe we're bad? who's to say, but it's noticable, especially from ball ups.

Maybe we need to bring in Tsatas!
