How do you know he can play as a small forward? He's played as a marking forward both here and in SA all year.
I have no idea whether he can do it at AFL level. But you are basing your assumption he can't because he is good on a lead. In the games I have seen he has a lot of pace, very clean at ground level, tackles well. Has hit some packs front and centre at pace. All required attributes for a small forward.

Not sure if he is 6ft3 vs 6ft is a big deal?

No, that's not what I said or assumed. I said he hasn't played as a small forward. I've said a number of times here how agile and athletic he is and how good his hand eye coordination is - he's clean.

But that doesn't mean he can - or should be able to replicate what small forwards like Walters (177cm, 75kg) , M-TW (171cm, 76kg), Ryan (179cm - 72kg), C Rioli (177cm, 80kg) can. Those guys, with their lower centre of gravity at around 180, can turn on a 10 cent peice and usually have an acceleration advantage over 2, 5 and even 10 metres. Just as Marley (181cm 83kg) at his height is suited to playing on them and cleaning up ground balls.

Obviously small forwards play a critical role high up the ground in winning or halving ground balls down the line and any other ball coming out of D-50. We've been losing these the last 2 weeks and stuck in our back half.

Can Hosie play that role instead of being predominantly a marking target? It's hardly ideal for someone to have to play a different role than they're used to on debut. "Lachlan, we have 6 guys 189+ and Turner playing forward with the rotation tonight. We know you're a potent aerialist with smart leading patterns, good hands and set shot for goal but tonight we want you getting out the way of Mason, Cam and co and giving us small forward front and centre, pressure etc.'

People say well just play him there. It just shows how poor our recruitment of genuine, dynamic small forwards has been over time.

Hrovat (future 3rd and 4th round swaps) and Wilkinson (rookie pick 41) are the only 2 that fit the physical small forward mould but with respect - we've gone for bargain basement. Good luck to Wilkinson but we've hardly gone after elite talent in this area.

Garner at 187cm and 88 kg is way bigger than a Walters etc. Even Taylor at 187cm and Walker at 186cm will be 80kg +.

I really hope Rawlings comes in with his West Coast experience and says, this is ridiculous, we need some quality small forwards - not large mediums masquerading as small forwards, actual small forwards.

With hands like he has and good attack on the ball and man, could he play the halfback McDonald, Mcmillan role?.

Ahern didn’t play after half time. Didn’t look injured either. Looked to me to be playing more forward of the centre.. Make of it what you will.
Interesting.

Could be something/could be nothing.

I wonder if he and his management have informed the club they are "exploring their options"?

I'm fascinated with where this guy is at and I feel like he's on a bit of a knifes edge right now, so wouldn't be surprised to see him either take his bat and ball and go home or dig in and become a blue n white champion.

This has been a problem for so long. Haven't drafted a talented, genuine small forward since LT. Every new bloke seems to be a midfield hopeful, same as our small/medium defenders.

Probably a reflection of our lack of star midfielders before Higgins and Cunnington emerged over the last three years. Now they're both in the back third of their career the hunt continues. Not a whole lot of use in drafting gun specialist players when your midfield isn't sorted. Could still argue that we need to keep going after mids until we get some hard runners into the side.

Best of AFL
Lachie Hosie
Since arriving at Arden Street with pick 5 in the 2019 NAB Mid-Season Rookie Draft, Hosie has added more drive and tenacity in North’s forward six.

The 22-year-old was an ever-present threat in contested situations, taking six marks against the Blues, but proved equally adept when pursuing the footy on the deck.

Inaccuracy in front of goal turned a potentially great outing into a good one, booting two goals from eight scoring shots, but the forward continues going from strength to strength.

“He was probably our most lively AFL-listed player,” said Loader.

“He’s a terrific kick, I thought he was one of the players who could really hold their head up today. I thought he tried right until the very end of the game.”

The early precursor to an AFL debut perhaps?
