Looked some ways off it but I think there's a bit to work with there. Coulthard is 22 where Robbie is only 19, so its hard to compare given the ages.
Maric looks incredibly fit whereas Bobby looks a bit behind in that regard which is totally understandable.

Crikey bit of gun jumping!

Kid is 1.5 months in the AFL system, no preseason, under a beaten down interim coach, little credible on-field leadership and playing for our worst side in modern history.

Might ease on the valuations until he has a fair go at it.
So if we're looking for improvement in the overall quality of the list, this is the VFL comparison between a 19 year old with no AFL pre-season behind him, who left home mid-season, with a 21 year with 3 pre-seasons behind him.

As you say, maybe the gun has jumped a bit early

He had an opportunity to stamp himself as a small forward and he ******* blew it in my opinion. Second or third quarter (* I dont know its all a ******* blur) and had an opportunity to straight line a player on the wing in a contest.. not only was that opportunity missed the exit had him standing flat footed with no pressure. What an easy way to piss away your AFL opportunity.

Isn't the main gripe simply that we played him when he clearly wasn't ready? I know that's my issue with it.

It was the one game of the year we were definitively expected to win, and we brought into the team a child who's been at the club a month.

I can see why that would rub some people the wrong way. Not Robbie's fault of course, but a ******* stupid selection decision. Even watching that four goal game in the VFL you could see he'd struggle at the level. No meat on him, no kicking penetration. I'm not concluding anything about where his career will go off it but it reeked of sentimentality at possibly the worst time of the year for sentimentality to creep in

Classic BF.

Play the kids, play the kids!

Then they play the kids...

Don’t play the kids! They’re not ready.

There is “play the kids”, and they show something, and you stick with them through up and down games as they achieve consistency. Much better than two games and back to the twos.
But I didn’t see anything that grabbed me about this kid. A bit like Spicer, no obvious inherent capability that would one day be a trait of actually making it

He has good positioning around the pack.

That puts him better than pretty much all our small or mediums at the drop of the ball. Backing him
That was what I noticed as well.

Didn't get a hell of a lot of it but his work around the packs looks promising. Was always buzzing around applying pressure ready to grab and go. Just didn't get much this time.

He's better off having some knowledge of what AFL level footy is all about and the fitness required so he can get to work in the off-season.
Drury got a taste before he was probably ready as well. Archer and Bergman last year as well, it's paid off for them this year imo getting that exposure.

Come off it. We can't be judging his future prospects on the back of his first game for Christ's sake. There's a difference between knowing he's not ready yet and moving to write him off entirely

Similar showing to what Spicer has put up to date. We all know what will happen to Spicer in 4 to 8 weeks time. Hardly got his hands on the footy in 4 quarters, would like to be wrong but can’t see him being any different to the long line of “electric small forwards” we’ve brought in with speculative picks over the years.

Needs a block of VFL, not only is he not ready, he’s apprehensive about the physicality as well

How bad is Coopers injury?

I genuinely have no clue what glimpses he's shown at senior level, but it takes a lot for me to write a player off. There's talent there even if he refuses to show it. Drop him, get a preseason into him, reassess next year

Too raw to pass judgement on. Not ready for AFL yet though. Try him again in 12 months

There's a balance between giving him experience and not breaking his spirit by him struggling too much. Its hard to speak on without knowing how he goes about it behind the scenes.
