Play Nice 46th President of the United States: Joe Biden (1) O Brave New World

Data currently shows most young people don't feel affiliated with either party, but they did with Bernie and history has shown that there is a significant block of voters in the US who will vote their party no matter who is the candidate or what they are running on.

The progressives in the Democratic controlled house are very, very hesitant to support Biden running in 2024. They are dancing around the questions on that when asked if he is running if they would endorse him. They know their voter base got in line with ideas like cancelling student debt and that has instead turned into life costing more.

It's why I said I'm worried they will take the world to war. They need an economic stimulus like they did back in 2008/2009 but with inflation already high and interest rates going the opposite direction than required to keep the economy afloat they don't have that license to pour fuel on the fire.

.... except if there is a global conflict when the rule book is thrown out the window. War is good for business unfortunately. It's good for economies.
I can't see the 'taking the world to war' at all.

Further I doubt that the younger voters would have carried Bernie over the line because as you say there is a significant block of voters that will vote their party.

Not sure how many independents supported him but even then it would have required a large block of Democrats including Blacks and Hispanics.

Anyway, the Trump machine had a lot more money behind him so the lies would have been widely distributed.

Biden's choice of VP has been an enormous fizzer as normally the VP would stand if the President doesn't.

It would be a disaster if she stood.

I can't see the 'taking the world to war' at all.

I think there is a significant number of world leaders that are looking forward to the opportunities that Putin moving into another nation would bring them in regards to ramping up public spending in an inflationary period under the honourable/virtuous war declaration. They barely had time to count what they left in Afghanistan before they were ramping up to deliver material to Ukraine.

Further I doubt that the younger voters would have carried Bernie over the line because as you say there is a significant block of voters that will vote their party.

I too don't see them carrying him, but they sided with Biden because of the promise of student loan relief. That data I mentioned said most of them don't feel affiliated with one of the parties and I believe this is the reason why. I don't think they will bother to turn up at all for the Democrats next election if they feel conned.

Not sure how many independents supported him but even then it would have required a large block of Democrats including Blacks and Hispanics.

In regards to Sanders I agree, data currently showing Hispanic voter intentions along particularly the border regions (which were roughly 80% to Clinton in 2016) have totally inverted. That group has walked away from the Democratic party.

Anyway, the Trump machine had a lot more money behind him so the lies would have been widely distributed.

I agree, I don't think Sanders stood a chance because far more business interests were comfortable with either Trump or Clinton and would have supported Trump over Sanders too. It's a dirty game they have there. On one hand taking millions of dollars from groups and then with the other hand brushing away suggestions of later doing favours for those groups.

Biden's choice of VP has been an enormous fizzer as normally the VP would stand if the President doesn't.

It would be a disaster if she stood.

She has not done well at all. She was picked because of how she looks and her being a woman. I think people are smart enough to see through it on that basis alone. Then there is the issue that her greatest moments in her failed presidential bid were when she landed punches on Biden, and now she happily stands beside him.

It all plays into people waking up to just how much theater and fake smiles, but more importantly fake offense and anger, there is in politics.

Do you honestly think Bernie would have won (he would have miles better) given that the other side would have been screaming... 'left' and all variations of?

Not so sure the USA will ever be ready for a Bernie type politician, sadly.

They called Biden the same anyway. And Obama before him.

In 2020, thousands of people were dying from a pandemic while losing their health insurance that was tied to their employment, which they were leaving as a result of lockdown. The guy with the message of “people need access to free, universal healthcare” was the perfect candidate of the time, but people have had all hope drained from them and thought the guy who rejected all of the above was somehow the one who was more electable.

I have no idea what you are on about!

I never read as much about Biden being a leftie as compared to Sanders. The Republican propaganda machine together with the Murdoch media were going wild.

Your links provide little information unless they are compared with Sanders.

Anyway, Biden is there sadly and not a forward thinking candidate like Sanders.

Well Bernie didn't win the candidacy so we can't really compare in that regard. My point is they say the same thing every time. Obama was super successful despite all kinds of attacks.

American voters are showing they want a change - Obama was that in 2008, he didn't really deliver anything different so Trump was that in 2016. Turns out that kinda sucked so they went back to Biden in 2020, but people still aren't content with the status quo, as much as the Democratic leadership are desperately clinging to it, even as they get more and more ancient and demented.

You are right on the aging politicians in the USA, there are at least a dozen who should have retired years ago. Not to bring Bernie back into discussion but he has the sharpest mind despite his age. Sharper than some there in their 40's and 50's.

I honestly though that Pelosi had Parkinsons at times.

Same for Supreme Court Justices, they all should have a retiring age.

Perhaps these links have some substance, but I'm not going to waste my time on them if you are willing to use "says Trump campaign' as an authoritative source.

And again, you seem to imply that Biden was a worse choice than Trump ("somehow more electable"). A recurring theme with you.

My point isn't that Biden is radical, socialist, Marxist or communist (it's self-apparent to anyone with the slightest bit of political understanding that he's a right-wing neoliberal). It's that the Republicans and the right wing were going to call whoever the Democratic nominee was these things.

My comparison with the "somehow more electable" line was comparing Biden with Sanders, not with Trump.

Ah, gotcha. I missed your point.

And yes, from half a world away many of us just shook our heads in resignation (despair?) when the Democrats went with Biden over Bernie. It was so modern day USA and that's just so disappointing.

Actually I thought the point you were making was that Biden received more backlash than Sanders.

Yeah but it didnt stick as much as it would have for Bernie

People knew Biden wasnt a commie or a sosh - but they fear Bernie is/was - and that was the Republicans hope that Bernie got the nod

Agree, that was the point I was trying to make.

Joe Biden has signed a sweeping executive order to protect LGBTQ youth from Republican states targeting them— including new federal guidance for states to expand access to comprehensive health care for LGBTQ patients, shutting down conversion therapy and addressing youth suicide.

Jokes aside about whether Biden still thinks gay means happy, this is obviously good. More of this, please!

Famed election winner Hillary Clinton has offered her advice on how the Democrats can win from here.

She has suggested a willingness to compromise on principles if it can help winning the election - unsurprisingly this doesn't mean trying to make the lives of ordinary people struggling pay cheque to pay cheque, but rather cutting loose the fight for the rights of a minority.

I cannot allow the lunch to end without questioning the direction of her party. I say that Democrats seem to be going out of their way to lose elections by elevating activist causes, notably the transgender debate, which are relevant only to a small minority. What sense does it make to depict JK Rowling as a fascist? To my surprise, Clinton shares the premise of my question.

“We are standing on the precipice of losing our democracy, and everything that everybody else cares about then goes out the window,” she says. “Look, the most important thing is to win the next election. The alternative is so frightening that whatever does not help you win should not be a priority.”
