I just question the methodology.

If we’re essentially not going to bother with him then why not a mature castaway that we know can at least bash blokes and hold up an end and we don’t even have to develop

Like Zac Clarke? 🤭

Clarke was completely fine, I don’t know what all the fuss was about, as was Jon Giles before him, but they’re only fine options if you’re not aspirational and never want to get any better.

The only way this has any reasonable merit is if he ran over Dodoro’s son in one of them big rigs or was coked out of his mind the entire hub.

There was nothing fine about Clarke. He was petrified of his own shadow, which isn’t ideal as a ruckman.

One of the worst players to play senior footy over the past decade.

As a 3rd ruckman, 43rd player on the list, completely fine and would fit in anywhere.

Happy to shred 2s, happy to be a break glass in case of emergency option, happy to constantly be a travelling emergency. There is something to be said for guys with no ambition that are happy to be a jobber.

I thought we were getting somewhere when we went Crauford and not a 26 year old from the VFL, but clearly not.

Backups need to be at least capable of filling in. Clarke wasn’t up to that. Hence he was delisted after one year and went straight into suburban footy.

He was an incredibly poor pickup. Phillips is what you need in a backup ruck.

Yeah agree on Crauford, but I think only your fourth ruck can be a true project. You can’t really have two of them, there’s not room. So I guess they’ve decided to go with Bryan.

Ideally you want four, but I think we’ve settled with kinda 3.5 with Wright.

Is it maybe reasonable... that a bunch of coaches and list guys (who know nearly as much as us) spent a year with Henry, up close, saw his attitude to hard work and his ability to improve, and got an even better look at his talent than we have from a sum total of three minutes 40 of vision - and then collectively decided that Eyre or Brand might be better to add to the list?

Imagine delisting Laverde over Crauford. What an absolute joke.

Seems to be a lot of reacting to the delisting of the concept of what Crawford might have been if he had been exactly what we all hoped.

I wouldn't get too caught up in his attitude, I think that's a bit of a red herring.

To persist with Crauford it would mean de-listing Phillips and going into a season with a specialist ruck department that has Draper's 8 games of experience.

Crauford would arguably have been the number 2, because he's older and more ready physically than Bryan, and his footballing experience is limited to SANFL reserves and AFL reserves scratch matches. Bryan, for all of his raw physical potential, is a beanpole who needs to be allowed to develop himself physically. Bryan is much less ready to go physically than what Draper was and Draper was a write off for 2 years. He's also been limited to the scratch matches.

If you're looking at it conservatively Phillips is clearly needed as backup, likely even for next year. Had circumstances been different, I suspect Crauford would have wow'd us in the VFL and that he'd be the number 2 but it's a big leap with no exposed form and the club is not in rebuild or reset territory (all of the talk from Brasher is piss and wind).

At the end of the day we've lost spots from the list. We're not going to persist with 4 specialist rucks. The 4th ruck is essentially a write-off of a list spot for 3 to 5 years.

I would have taken the risk because the ruck is about 15th on the list of issues for next year but I can see why they made the conservative call.

Gee that’s a big call. If club even suspected that they would have found room for him. Or another club will pick him up which seems unlikely. Clearly club felt he wasn’t up to it

Lets rage about a bloke no one has actually seen play other than a few edited scratch match highlights.

but but Tudor said he was killing every practice match

in hindsight he also said that about every other player who played, even had nice words about the opposition and on one occasion said the goalpost did a great job too
