AFL Player 48: Liam McMahon - Re-signed for another year! - 10/9

It sucks that we signed jones for 2 years. McMahon is a better forward option. I just don’t see how he plays though current. Should definitely get an extension though
I wouldn't have extended Jones, but maybe he can run around in the 2's while McMahon gets some games instead. Otherwise, I am fine with Liam having a run down back too.

I get the feeling the Jones re-signing was a Brad decision. Jones just doesn't have the composure, consistency or IQ required, he looks too nervous out there. When you see gun forward lines like the Hawks 3 peat or WCE18 they had forwards like McMahon - where you could dominate but not put it on the scoreboard they go down their end and punish with accurate kicking.

It's a hard choice to make, and with Langford coming back in a couple of weeks it will be even harder.

It's a shame because he should probably get a shot.
I do wonder if we rest 19 year old, second year, 24 gamer Nate Caddy and give Liam a shot to at least see what we have on our hands in Liam McMahon.

I think his style of play would typically translate to the highest level as well, although our forward entries are usually less than desirable. If we manage to keep him on the list and with the 2026 returning guys we are going to have a lot of talls.

He looked really good, but dropping Wright or Caddy just to bring him in are both ridiculous ideas. You don't reward good form with an unwarranted rest in the twos.
Caddy could be a freak and the exception but most second year talls aren’t playing as the number 1 or 2 banana every week.

Giving Nate a rest would be smart player management (not advocating next match, just N idea that has merit)

Don't forget he can play down back. In for Blakiston could be an option and no, Blakiston hasn't done anything wrong per se.

Side note, bloos could probably use him to try to help Curnow with McKay out right about now 😂😂😂

Or just play Caddy like a half forward rolling up to the wing. He clearly has the attributes to play more than just KP role. We will need support in that area next game if Duursma doesn't come good anyway.

Could be a good time to simply play Caddy on the wing for a few weeks.

No way Caddy gets rested, or May IMO.

I would bring McMahon in for Guelfi who is poor atm. Get Lual forward of centre for pressure.

Still need a decent small forward to replace Gresham but just play Martin forward too.

With our emerging talls, not sure why we were so quick to sign Jones tbh.

Guelfi is averaging more than 4 tackles a game as a forward since returning from injury - a career high for him. He's also currently averaging a goal a game while playing defensively as a forward.

He's not the guy you move out if you want to play a high pressure forward half game.

Rotate Caddy and May as high half forwards or leave May at home and play Caddy up the ground. Both have decent tanks. Caddy is an excellent field kick.
That allows MacMahon to play.

I do agree that we need to find a player to take Gresham's spot. I thought it might be Unwin but he doesn't seem likely at the moment.

good point.

Going to be some interesting selection issues when some players get back, esp Langford.

Can we fit Langford and McMahon in the same side?

Yep, I don't even think it will make him a less potent goal kicker given he takes a lot of I50 marks returning from an high position.

The other one I think would interesting if we have a May, McMahon and Wright forward line is Langford going to the back line. Gives us more skill and height.

I'd like to see us just give him a chance. Lual looked a mile off it at VFL level and looks the way better prospect at AFL level.

I don't think so, do you?

I'd like to see McMahon produce similar output a few times before I say comfortably, let's move Langford out.

Maybe Langford could be Tassie trade bait though.

Then there's Edwards.

There were preseason experiments with Langford in the backline, weren't there?
