Dual premiership player drawing your vitriol, wow. Won the BnF in the premiership year too.
I’m sure he’s putting his all into getting us back up the ladder too, seems very vocal at training. No need to be bagging him imo, we’ve been a poor side for a few years now, and that’s not on Short.

It was a joke as if I would say that seriously. Short calls for balls laterally, and that annoys me, and that annoys me about Smith as well, but I never criticise our players vitriolically. Leave that to others.

That's pretty much my criticism of him as well. That and panic kicking under pressure and going to ground every time the ball's in dispute.

Apart from that I don't have a problem with him.

I went to the G and never saw the Magoo's. This bloke had 26 possies at 92%, surely can't be far off a senior recall with all the players who have spudded it up in the one's so far this year? Honest assessment from those who watched the Magoo's, how did he play?
Live at the ground he was awful. He got led to the ball far too often and his defensive effort is not good enough for AFL level.

Wouldn't say awful like Ricky above, but he just plays to safe. Rarely puts himself into difficult situations, prefers to wait outside for the give and go. Also takes the kick-ins, so bumps up his numbers. Has not improved much since he got here.

I don't like being this negative towards our players but I don't see him ever making it. He's a fine player, just not what we need and doesn't offer much. Feels like a waste of a spot. I always forget about him. Would love to be proven wrong though.
Try him on a wing

With his kicking, I'd like to try him forward of center. Can't be much worse than some of the options we have tried at that point.
Can't be any worse.

That pretty much sums it up “plays safe “. I remember watching his highlights reel when he was drafted and he looked lightening quick. His combine results were elite for speed (2.88) but you just don’t see him take on the game even at VFL level.
This stage of his career he should be playing that run/carry game in the VFL that makes him a really attractive proposition for that running hb role at AFL level . Grlj is doing this in his first year.

It annoys me that they have only thrown him on the ball once in his career for a quarter (and was good) to improve his weakness of not getting his own ball. The VFL to me is about improving the AFL listed players, but it seems to me that we take it as winning games, our VFL midfield is all VFL players.

They should be running Smith, Peucker, NRH even Algar through the middle because it will improve their overall games.

Just can't see him getting any more games. Grij has stepped into the best 23.

100%
I think NRH and Peuker in particular have the game to play some midfield time, and hoping we see them part of the rotations as the season progresses . Both looked good on Saturday, excellent by foot.
Algar is so dangerous around goals, the commentators mentioned on numerous occasions on how good his second efforts were in the contest, one of them compared him to Lalor, which is a stretch imo. Definitely has the skill to play higher, but I think he’s going to be so dangerous around goals, that he’ll spend most of his time forward.
Smith has definitely improved, I hope he gets an opportunity this year, but with Grlj playing that hb role alongside Short it’s hard to see where he fits!

Hes had a few years to develop the run and carry game but like you said he just wants the easy ball and doesnt over extend himself. if hes not creating drive from hb or an effective defender wtf is he doing out there?

He got caught a couple of times on the weekend, attempting to run/carry which was a good thing. If he’s going to have any chance of making it he needs to play with more dare.
I don’t know how his pace stacks up against Grlj, MRJ, Campbell etc, but if you’re running a 2.88 at the combine you’re quick. Got to use that asset or he’s no chance of making it

Re Algar, yes he is a forward, but any time you play midfield you improve your game, whether you end up playing there or not. You can see it with Campbell, going through the midfield has improved his ability in traffic.

I see Alger development going the same way as Campbell and that is the template we should be looking at
HHF that could eventually run through the midfield in spurts and both these boys have great footy IQ and read the play extremely well. I think in 2027 Jasper will be part of our starting 23

The only difference between Campbell and Algar is that one of Algar's best attributes is he is really good in the air. Quite a rare trait these days so he might be more of a handfull up forward. Campbell is a developing mid/forward.

Going to be very interesting in a couple of years with Algar, Hotton, Campbell, Lalor and Cumming in or around the forward line at times (when not in the midfield). Going to be one hell of a small forward line. Faull, Armstrong and Fawcett.
