He’s featured in 8 games now? Layed 1 tackle.
6 games not 8, and 4 as the sub, so that's a little misleading. Was subbed out also in at least one of those two full games.

Thought he was quite good in his short time on ground. He has speed, run and overlap which we have missed big time since Rioli has gone. He should be given a go as the 7th defender for a few weeks because I think he would compliment the rising young defenders like Brown and Trainor pretty well.

Does need to work on his defensive side as you suggest.

Have re-checked, you are correct. Smith has played about 13 1/4’s worth of game time so 3 matches plus a quarter at average game time in the low 80% region.

He has one tackle and 12 pressure acts. You would expect something closer to 8+ tackles and 30+ pressure acts. So his defensive numbers are incredibly low. Now part of this may just be the ball hasn’t come through his area much when the opposition has attacked. But if that is not the case, then it would suggest to me he just doesn’t get the defensive side of the game at all. He could only either be getting lost in his defensive structure role or not stepping in to tackle or apply pressure when it is his turn, or both.

Hopefully it is something he can learn as he goes, because we can all see he has something to offer offensively - albeit just glimpses at this stage of his development.

We have conceded 70 shots on goal over the last two matches. This is about 20 more than you would accept as reasonable for say our team at this stage next year. So we have about 12 months to stop those extra 2-3 shots per 1/4 leaking. The team is clearly going to experiment with different structures until they figure out which players work best both defensively and offensively. So a player like Smith should have time to get some games. But this week either or both of Banks & Hugo return, so I think Smith might be making way for whoever of those two plays,

Agree with the analysis. I have observed he tends to float around a bit and wait for the easy possession which could account for his low defensive numbers. But he has some fair excuses in that regard, being sub, not really feeling like he belongs, every mistake could see him back in the VFL. In the VFL he is a lot more proactive.

I thought he did some nice things on the weekend, probably coming on early in the 3rd rather than halfway through the 4th might have given him a bit more licence, but he does need to add some more intensity at the ball and the man, but that can be added, Short, Houli, Brown all had similar traits.

Smith is a small defender. Pressure acts are the domain of small forwards, mids.

RFC has replaced D Rioli with Trainor.

Banks has been on a wing. Hugo hasn't played.

Banks for Tresize, ?? for Armstrong, Alger for Mansell if reqd

Saints had a small forward line, it would have been the perfect game for Smith. But SUB & likely dropped.

He is not rated

I am holding Smith to the standards for tackle/pressure act numbers for small defenders. He is a long way shy at this stage.

Smith SHOULD be playing the role Short is if we are focusing on the future.

Yep, agree.

The club on field is already a shambles, we need to see what kids are worth persisting with. Hard to see it when they all get played out of position or get given 1 quarter of footy because "we don't want the kids getting smashed every week".

Newsflash: we are already getting smashed.

Can someone care to enlighten me as to why Smith has copped a pasting in the game day thread?

He’s played 9 games, a handful of those as a sub and missed the entirety of his first season injured.

He actually got his hands on the footy last night and did some nice things. I’m genuinely confused as to how he is judged so harshly?

Wasn’t following the game day thread but had some moments when we were out that his poor decision or execution cost us - handball option to Vlaustin under pressure in the middle of the field being one example

Was an almost kind of a game for him but positives slightly edged the negatives in my books

Received a fair bit of criticism last night but I thought he took a step forward … racked up 20 disposals and displayed neat skills …. The other parts of the game might come to him in time but we shall wait and see
Agree. Thought he was Ok.
That long handball would open up play 9 out of 10 times but unfortunately was the wrong option on that occasion.
He was @ least trying to take the game on.

Can't make his mind up when he gets the ball

used to only playing in the 2nd half of a game so his mind was probably elsewhere in the 1st half thinking he was the sub
If he can avoid the pine like he avoided contact he might be a player 😳

As much as I'd like him to prove me wrong I just can't see Kaleb making it.
Modern football requires smalls to be either quick/agile or extremly skilled & I see none of these qualities.
Then you’re not looking. Smith has speed. Not trying to defend him but if you can not see he has good pace then you’re blind.
