People sitting there praising Ellis up and calling him tough for laying the odd good tackle here and there. Never mind it rarely happens and never mind he rarely if ever is prepared to be tackled.Never mind few of his tackles are ever effective.

Laying a tackle is not being tough its a simple skill that is expected of all players.Tough is wearing a hard tackle knowing its coming and not putting the teammate in a position where he cops it instead.Tough is putting your head over the ball knowing its coming.
Tough is making sure you get the hands free drawing a player in knowing your going to get hammered. when if ever does this happen with Ellis.

Dusty didnt lay a tackle in his first two games and Dimma came out defending him saying it isnt his team job to get in and lay tackles.

At least those here who constantly critisise Ellis have access to his actual game day instructions. I wish they would share them for the rest of us.

Lol Dimma was talking crap he was defending his player cause loves them but when you play inside midfield you are expected to put on defensive pressure. it would not have been what he would be saying behind closed doors of course his role is to be an offensive player but when it's your time to go it's your time to and we see at times Dusty just gives up on a player.

Putting on defensive pressure isnt just laying tackles. Dustys dont argues dropped dramatically in 2018 after Dimma said post GF that he wanted him to ease up on them and not feel the need he has to do it all.

[Edit, not sure why the imposter disliked this, its fact]

He's a genius, Brandon. Despite having no courage and no discernable football ability he's managed to dupe people like Damien Hardwick, Benny Gale, Neil Balme and many, many others and play 150 plus games in a strong Richmond side, snag a flag and continues to get selected... astonishing!

Interesting to look at the players who average fewer tackles than Ellis per game.
In this order, Rioli, Houli, Sheds, Dusty, Balta, Grimes, Broad, Garth, Short, Astbury last on the list.
Obviously there's a reason they all have lower tackle counts, so it amuses me for some reason Ellis is constantly signaled out.

He actually got gifted a lot of games early on in his career when we were a very poor side and had no depth. The last 3 seasons when we have been strong he has been in and out of the side. Brando is on the edge atm and competition for spots is fierce so he’d wanna keep the foot down if he what’s a game come finals.

0.44 first quarter Ellis receives a short kick from Houli in the back pocket and then goes short to Grimes just outside 50.
1.15 first quarter Ellis gets uncontested mark on the defensive wing, goes short and sideways to Prestia who handballs to the running Edwards on to Vlastuin who passes to Stack who drops the mark.
7.21-7.40 first quarter Ellis turns over the ball on the wing after trying to handball while being grabbed from behind. Defenders win ball back and Vlastuin fires out a handball as tackled, Ellis gathers and immediately gives handball to running Lambert who goes to Rioli who fumbles, Plowman then gives away a deliberate OOB free kick
7.53 first quarter Ellis takes the free from the deliberate and goes short inside to the running Graham who props and then goes long inside 50 after umpire called not 15
9.52 first quarter Ellis receives handball on defensive side of wing and runs & carries nobody presenting up the ground except for Reiwoldt on the boundary. Poor kick results in turnover that Carlton take inside F50
19.22 first quarter Ellis back supporting defenders receives handball from Astbury with nowhere to go, goes back to Astbury who manages to find Edwards on the wing for a sliding mark.
23.10 first quarter Ellis 3rd in a chain of handballs hits Castagna who is run down by SPS who forces the turnover.
24.27 first quarter Ellis pressures SPS on the Carlton HFF who proceeds to kick OOF

2.38 second quarter Ellis wins a ground ball contest with Silvagni but his handball out is picked off by Carlton who go forward but turnover the ball as Vlastuin marks
4.22 second quarter Ellis receives a switch kick from Vlastuin and picks out Graham whose kick is picked off by Plowman on the wing
9.19 second quarter Ellis receives the free kick from Murphy deliberate OOB, goes long to the square to Chol who can't mark but Graham crumbs and goals.
20.11 second quarter Ellis receives from Houli 25m out from defensive goals and goes out to Rioli who gathers and runs on as support.
24.23 second quarter Ellis tackles Cripps forcing a boundary throw in.
29.21 second quarter Ellis makes up 10-15m on Setterfield to tackle and force a poor disposal which resulted in a turnover collected by Graham whose kick is beaten by the siren.

4.59 third quarter Ellis attacks Murphys kick off the ground in the middle and handballs to Ross who flicks wide to Short back to Ross to Prestia back to Short who knocks the ball on.
5.17 third quarter Ellis following on the above play provides support to Short and then pressures Newman who can only kick 25m down the line and OOB
6.19 third quarter Ellis in a 1-2 with Broad whose kick is smothered by Silvagni
18.07 third quarter Ellis gathers inside D50 and picks out Baker on defensive side of the wing who goes to Short who is picked off by SPS at HB for Carlton
20.58 third quarter Ellis gathers a hurried kicked from the Blues near the boundary under pressure and bangs it on his boot picked off by SPS inside our F50
23.44 third quarter Ellis gathers on the attacking side of the wing and picks out Lynch inside 50 who converts the goal.
27.04 third quarter Ellis marks on the wing goes short and sideways to Edwards in the middle who goes inside 50 to a contest Carlton clears
30.33 third quarter Ellis and Grimes battle 2 Blues near the outer boundary and force a stoppage
31.39 third quarter Ellis pressures Setterfield who turns it over to Ross, who goes back to Ellis who goes long down the ground to Riewoldt in a 1-1 contest with Jones, who wins out, Ellis following up the play tackles Silvagni over the boundary

6.10 fourth quarter Ellis picks off Weiterings clearing kick from D50, goes long to Jack in the pocket who brings the ball to ground, Blues gather but turn it over and Jack centres back to the top of the square whese Lynch can't mark.
24.06 fourth quarter Ellis chases down O'Brien almost forcing the turnover on our F50, Newman eventually clears on his 3rd attempt and kicking it off the ground.
24.31 fourth quarter Ellis follows the ball down and receives from Astbury and goes to Vlastuin who is tackled over the line.
26.43 fourth quarter Ellis comes from behind and makes a spoil 25m out from the Blues goal with less than 4 minutes remaining. Lambert crumbs and gets the ball to Baker who goes to Houli who clears D50
28.12 fourth quarter Ellis hacks a kick forward under pressure, Blues eventually gather and clear D50.

There have been claims made that Ellis regularly goes short and sideways with his disposals so I thought I'd watch and document his extended highlights video from the AFL site. From that video there were 3-4 occasions where Ellis went short/sideways by foot and each time it was the right option considering what was on offer up the ground. The package also highlights a number of occasions where Ellis attacks the ball/man and either forces or nearly forces a turnover, while there are a couple of occasions where Ellis commits a turnover generally under pressure. It also highlights Ellis' role as a number of his possessions are gathered while either back in defence helping them out or hanging back around the HFF while we've got the ball inside 50 to stop the quick rebound.

Overall it shows that throughout the game he had more than a low impact that some have suggested he had.

There was few times where he could have gone straight looking at the ponsford end behind the goals, however there was no definitively right choice to kick too, so imo was the right call at the time. The problem is when watching the TV its looks crabby, but at the ground it was a good decision.

Hi theflea that is an interesting observation you have made in relation to BEllis's footy!...

....................The problem is when watching the TV its looks crabby, but at the ground it was a good decision........................

I wonder how many of BEllis's critics go to the footy and watch him play live, before they make their comments about his game style, from the comfort of their viewing chairs...

Well that's pretty easy, you pretty much just listed our entire back 6 without Tigga so there's obviously something in that, I'd say it's that they don't rely on too many tackles in the back half and spoils, intercepts and 1%'ers would be their main KPI's from a defensive point of view. Don't want to be giving up possession to the forwards and then having to chase them down.

So that just leaves Rioli who has copped a lot of criticism and calls to be dropped on this board for being out of form, Balta who has played 7 or so games in his career, and Dusty who we'd all love to tackle more but is arguably the best offensive player in the game so it should go without saying that he more than makes up for the one weakness in his game.

Exactly. We basically have a back 7 because of rotations and Ellis is part of that, and his tackle count is similar to his counterparts, thats why it ammuses me he is the one singled out.

Most of Brandon’s tackles a half hearted and when he gets tackled it’s even worse, the amount of panic written all over his face when an opponent comes at him is laughable. Just a turnover waiting to happen when Brandon doesn’t get the ball in space with time.

Seriously?!? Evidence of a panicked face?!? Or just another urban myth in regards to BEllis!
