If the right trade comes along, take it. If not then I'm not too fussed about him staying.

He is rabidly hated by quite a chunk of this supporter base and it is really pathetic. He'd be on his own 50 metres from goal and I'd yell for someone to kick it to him and get "Oh NOO DON'T GO TO STANTON HE'S AN IDIOT" in return... Lady he's free and has a clear run at goal, shut the **** up.

And whilst the hate for him is over the top I can't say I'm a huge fan... I struggle to see this team going much further than where it is at the moment with him as one of the main players.

I never understood all the hate that stanton copped on here years ago. Thought in 2011/2012 he was one of our best (in fairly shallow list). This year he has delivered little, his kicking has become a liability and tonight when he really needed to stand up he was absolutely pathetic....so many players junior to him in age and experience outplayed him. I think that unfortunately Stanton is in the P-heart brigade with the likes of lonergran, reimers melksham that had/have to be moved on for this club to go anywhere.

Don't hate stants but he is sooo frustrating.
Goes to ground far to easily almost like he is looking for the free or looking for easy one over the top. And just does not seem to find the ball on the outside anymore, which made him so dangerous early '12,'13.
Fumbling is a real problem too

I have been frustrated by Stants for years but accepted he was an enigmatic player with strengths on balance outweighing weaknesses. Think with loss of pace/run that has now reversed...happy to retain as loyal servant but shouldn't be best 22 next year.

Been a great player, has a massive engine but just too damn slow and i'm not just talking about leg speed but reaction time as well. It seems like it takes him an eternity to possess then dispose of the ball.

Seems to be an instant in on the line-ups which shits me, yes I'am anti-Stanton.
But sometimes don't see what he's done to deserve his spot. Give him a reality check in vfl if he MUST be kept.
Or draft. Not like another ruckman wouldn't hurt or an experienced forward..

Some players are built for VFL.. but never convert to AFL level.

Some players are built for regular season.. but never do it on the big stages.

Stanton is one that just doesn't seem to handle the heat. Went absolutely missing tonight. Terrible.

If it is true and he is close with Hird.. then lets hope he can turn the ship around. Shame because we missed his run and carry badly this season.
Lol, please. Was in our best two in both of our other finals of the past decade. Think before you post.

Yeah.. I'm not sure that being in the 'best 2' of the aforementioned finals is anything to get excited about.. I think we got collectively smashed by 200 points in those outings.

Even you, as his biggest fan, surely have to see that he has struggled this year and had a particularly bad stinker tonight?

It certainly kills your totally bullshit argument that he doesn't perform when the heat is on. Best against Carlton, behind only NLM against Adelaide.

I've been outspoken about how he's gone backwards this year, but I didn't think tonight was especially poor. Certainly I thought Gleeson, Dempsey, Winderlich, Watson, Zaharakis, Howlett and Steinberg were worse. Probably Hibberd as well.

****** the bloke is damned if he is and damned if he doesn't. You can't pick and choose which big stage is valid and which isn't.

Can't disagree with any of those names.. all were disappointing.

And absolutely Stanton is a victim of his own success to a certain degree.

As to your names though:
Gleeson - first year, good for the experience.. shouldn't have been on the field, should have been sub. Not required to be anywhere near Stanton's level.
Dempsey - poor. No doubt poor but should NEVER have been sub. Dempsey always 'builds' into games.. by the time he came on, North were up and running and it was game over. I never like to pick out the sub.. it is a tough role.
Winders - yep poor. But he is retiring.. so can't really trade him. On top of that.. I thought he was used incorrectly at times.. and didn't get any support when he was played up forward. A guy playing his last game shouldn't be compared with a supposed 'prime' midfielder.. imho.
Watson - Deceptive. Had 25 touches, at 80% efficiency and 6 tackles. Spent 30% of his time up forward which didn't help. It was an average game, probably poor from the captain. There is no hope I would ever trade him though, so moot point.
Zaka - Poor game. No doubt about it. However he has more leg speed than Stanton and I wouldn't trade him.
Howlett - Poor game, again. Have been calling for him to be dropped and yet he keeps getting selected. I agree he doesn't have a role in this team. Absolutely went missing. However he shouldn't be in the same field as Stanton, who is supposedly one of our 'top' midfielders.
Steiny - 3rd gamer.. please.
Hibberd - Rusty and shaky and nervous. Equally as poor as Stanton however has been close to AA standard for two seasons and isn't going anywhere.

I wasn't doubting it was the 'big' stage.. what I was saying is that if your team gets smashed by 100.. I'm not sure how important it is to be 'one of the best 2' players.. cause there is a good chance that 18 blokes had howlers around you...

So there's mitigating circumstances for everyone except the whipping boy? Got it.
I wasn't even the one having the biggest go at him.. but ok. It's ok.. we are all a little upset right now.

Watching a 'prime' midfielder get outworked by one of the slowest rucks around.. wasn't great tbh.

I mean I won't even get into how ******* ridiculous it is that we should give Howlett a pass over Stanton because although he's done less we expect more from Stanton, yet we should give Hibberd a pass over Stanton because although we expect more from Hibberd, he's done more than Stanton.

given the craziness of the last 2 seasons, and hopefully now having some semblance of certainty with our head coach, can we hold off on trading our club stalwarts for maybe another12 months? Call me crazy, but I think they've stuck by the club pretty well, so maybe we should afford them the same respect?

Hibberd is in our best 10 players.
I didn't give Howlett a pass in the slightest.. in fact I said he isn't best 22 and yeah.. if we can trade him.. trade him..

Stanton, on this years form, (and we have debated this before) is not currently in our best 5 midfielders.. and there are more young guys coming up fast behind like Merrett x 2, Gleeson, Ashby etc..

So I am merely suggesting that maybe he is a trade OPTION.. not to give away for free.. or delist.. but IF the right trade could be done.. then like Sydney, Hawthorn and Geelong do.. you trade DECENT players to ensure your list stays refreshed.. I don't think it is that bad actually.

The concept being that you give away your 4/5th best midfielder.. and have a crack at picking up another Z Merrett.. or combing that pick with one you already hold to have a serious chance to land a Patton or Boyd or Cameron or whatever...

By the same token.. I don't boo him.. and I never have.. and I won't be upset if he plays next year.. so no need to go full cyber.
