Been a great servant for the club but time to go. His greatest attribute is his elite endurance and link up play. Unfortunately once players like him start to age and they lose their endurance/running power they start quickly becoming a liability.

Why indeed? I would have thought getting to the ball first was the better option.

Only thing I can think of is maybe he couldn't see any options if he took the ball first himself (because let's face it there was a fair chance he would have gone to ground too) so he wanted to hold it up.

Like I said though I haven't seen a replay. I could be making this up entirely.
I haven't seen the replay either so I am as well but for any other senior player you would of expected a goal was quite close to the 50 meter arc if I remember correctly just a ruckman to beat a shot at goal at least

I don't know about that. I think we need to find him another role.

I wouldn't be against moving on (with the right price/replacement) but the bolded isn't true.

Robert Harvey was doing it until he was 53.

He's a senior leader of the midfield. I judge him by higher standards than I do most others. Like I do Jobe, Chap, Goddard etc. Stanton was bloody ordinary last night. At one point he got beaten on pace to the ball by TODD GOLDSTEIN ffs.
Watson and Chapman did what was required from senior leaders last night.

Goddard, Stanton and Myers didn't. And I think it's the main reason we lost.

Stanton has been a very good player for most of his career but the one thing that has let him down, similar to Goddard earlier on in his career is the fact he's never been a big game player, people held goodard in a similar light up until the 09/10 finals series where he stamped himself on the game and helped drag the saints across the line on many occasions. was solid but never elite until that stage. stants just goes missing to often in big games, that's why heppell has overtaken him. will never be a big game player, just a very good above average player.

Perform, yes. But you hold Bags to the same standard you hold Jobe?
Yes - Baguley has played 50 games - That's when the L plates come off - I thought howlett was solid last night - He's been solid for the last 4 weeks, though I can't see Howlett in our next premiership - And Stanton is no certainty.

If we were to move on Stanton what clubs would honestly be willing to give up a decent pick/player for him? At best I could see us getting a second round pick and I'd rather keep Stanton as he is a good leader and can teach a lot of the young kids a lot about worth ethic. It's also vitally important to have depth and even if he's not a regular next season he can provide that depth.

I like Stanton. Pretty harsh to move the guy on because he played a couple of ordinary games this year. Melksham would be closer to being traded than Stants I'd think. ...anyway, Clarko likes Stanton a lot IIRC. Who at Hawthorn would be worth Stanton?

No seriously, a bit harsh... Hawthorn Hawthorn Hawthorn.

I've never been a Stanton basher or defender. I've always regarded him as a good player who has some strengths and some limitations. I can't help but wonder "what now?" for Stanton. I just don't know if he has it in him to rediscover the kind of form where he can play an important role in the team again. One of his main problems is his lack of versatility. If there comes a time where he's no longer a first choice outside mid, then i'm not sure he can play any other roles to a good enough level.

I still think he will start next year as clear best 22 (in the selectors mind). Where he goes from there is anybody's guess.
