Wouldnt happen to have anything to do with the entire team dropping dead in the back end of seasons?
Or we just gonna blame it all on stanton? I assume thats what time of year we are in. I guess this type of discussion beats worrying about drugs
the thread is about Stanton - Not the rest of the team - His form drops off in the second half of the season - That's a fact.

Team played OK in the second half of the team in 2014.

It's a bit of a worry that a mod is threatening, even if joking ( is he joking?), to card people for having a contrary opinion on a player and others are cracking the sads because a topic has been bought up again. Isn't part of the point of this board to have debate about the direction and play of our club and its players?

Personally, I'd move Stanton if a 'fair' offer was around, and would have done so 2 years ago.

Yeah, he's been a great clubman and I'm appreciative of his efforts in the red and black, but he's been well compensated for his time here and I'm sure the club could and would find a role for him in the future if he was interested. Money isn't everything, sure, but the club doesn't necessarily owe him either.
I don't think it's a coincidence that him sitting so high on the all time games played list coincides with one of our poorest on field periods in a while. That's not his fault, but if we had of had a side in the last decade that looked remotely like challenging for a flag I question just how many games he would have played.

He has very good endurance, but other than that is just an average AFL player (there's nothing wrong with that). His disposal hasn't improved at all (witness some of his terrible inside 50 attempts last season) and nor really has his decision making. he gets a lot of the ball (especially calling for it from our young guys) but often puts himself in a terrible position to receive it, either because he is too close to another player or is unaware of where an opponent is.

I assume he'll be best 22 this season, but i'm not sure how long past this one.

It doesn't really have anything to do with anything, but for a senior player his effort in the dying seconds of the Melbourne debacle last year was one of the worst you'll ever see. A first year player would have been dropped for a month for the effort he showed on the wing, for a senior player it was pretty much unforgivable.

You're absolutely right mike and I'm sure he is joking. Moderators are still allowed to have opinions though and speaking for myself just as another poster I find the timing of the topic mildly distasteful. It may well be a conversation for later in the season though. Having said that, if that's what people want to talk about then by all means go for it as long as it stays within the board rules.

its also a fact that the team has dropped off in previous seasons, with many of our players having incredibly poor finishes.
So until people start posting it in other players threads ill take it for what it is-
the start of another seasons worth of attacks of this boards whipping boy who has never got the respect he has earnt for what he has done for this club.
He's actually just come off one of his statistically best years.

Lol at talks about moving on a player, especially a serviceable player like Stanton. It's a privilege for the club that players are actually willing to stay on after the crap that they had to endure the last 2 years.

Keeping in mind the AFL determine the compensation for free agency off an unofficial formula (make it up as you go...) and screw over EFC wherever possible I wouldn't bank on losing a player through free agency and receiving adequate compensation. Stanton is a fantastic player and should be supported accordingly.

Stanton isn't going anywhere.

He was excellent in 2013 under Hird's long kicking style driven game plan. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stanton to have a career best year as full time wingman and begin his march to the 300 game milestone.

mike14, I'd be 100% certain he was joking. :)

Much like how I threaten to perma people every so often for heaping praise on Damian Barrett, for example. ;)
Yeah, I was 99% sure he was joking too. My point was simply to question why there is ever a 'bad/wrong time' to discuss Stanton or any other players place in the team. As long as it doesn't devolve into "Stanton sux" vs "Stanton rox" crap then debate on the makeup of the team should be encouraged and promoted, not filled with "not this again" because it goes against what you believe is correct

I think people get tetchy about it because it seems to be suggested, without fail, every year and it just never ends up happening. That said, with the passage of time and the fact he's much closer to the end than the start of his career, I suppose it becomes more likely than it was in the past.

That said, I'll be waiting to see what his form is actually like in 2015 before I go making any calls as to Stanton's future at the club. At this point, he's a loyal club servant of 11 years, a leader at the club and a vice-captain; his credits in the bank are not small.

This is where it is at as far as i am concerned. I've always been a big fan of Stanton, but it is undeniable that the competition for best 22 is getting intense. FWIW, i think there is every chance he will get a new lease on life if Cooney finds form. We need Stanton to do the defensive running and link up, releasing Cooney and Colyer. The mix looks near perfect.
But with Gleeson, Ashby and Edwards looking so promising, he will have to be on top of his game...

I actually think it is one of the more interesting threads. It's always controversial when you have a team that improves to the point where it starts to force out good players. Someone always has to be close to the chopping block and there is really a very small list of players who fit the bill. Z Merret, Hocking, Dempsey and Stanton. There is a massive case to hold on to all of those guys. Do you really Stanton is ahead of them?

No matter if it's Stanton, Fletcher, Jerret or (inset your EFC bunny here), our club will soon be in the situation to make some hard decisions for the best of the list. We will need to cover the age gap, in not participating in rounds 1 & 2 of the draft somewhere along the line.

I reckon we've gotten by the draft sanctions pretty well. Zach, Laverde, Langford will all be stars IMO, and hopefully Orazio comes good as well.
