Surprised he still gets tagged tbh as he is down the list of damaging midfielders these days. I personally think the game is going past him pretty quickly as he looks too slow for an outside midfielder in the modern game.

And, I'm not a Stanton basher, this is just an observation.

It's only the first game so I'll reserve my judgement.

I'm hoping he can improve.
Sick of people dissing Stanton for playing poorly,. Wasn't exactly the night for outside running types. L.Jetta had 15, R.Shaw had 17.

Amusingly I thought I was being quite diplomatic.

I'd wager they were much more quality disposals than Stanton. He shit himself with the ball and provides no pace in an already slowish midfield.

The sooner we can stop accepting mediocrity the better. He's been a great player but can you at least entertain the fact he may have to be dropped with that form?

He was terrible....hardly found the footy and butchered it when he did. Zero touches in last quarter.

It's not necessarily a reflection of his career to date, but hard to argue he wasn't terrible on the night I'd have thought.

I'm not denying he wasn't crash hot. Would like some perspective on his night.

Wasn't a direct narrative at you bud. Would just like some perspective on his game. It wasn't a night for the outside runners. May have been Yaco who mentioned 12 - 18 months ago that he is still a vital cog to our side. He may now not be required to be one of our top 5 midfielders but he is as important as those top guys with his link up etc.

Until one of our you guys is banging the door down, the only time we'll see Stanton at the VFL will be spectating.

Not sure what perspective or context there can be....conditions were same for everyone, he had a shocker.

Coming from me, it may be a little biased but the fact that the opposition are willing to waste a tagger on him shows that coaches still rate him as a threat to opposition sides.

Edit: Whilst I'm not saying he had a good game, he had half an excuse. Zaharakis on the other hand...........

Agreed. Remove the middle man to stop the supply

Oh and people will say, that he turns to water with a tag, well so do 90% of midfielders these days. Did no one watch Cotchin Thursday night? That bloke gets toweled almost every time he gets close attention. It's the elite ones like Fyfe, Pendles, Watson, Ablett and a few others that break tags more often than not.

You expected the same output from Joe Daniher on a dry day as a wet day then?

It's a question of relativity and expectations....I expect in the future that Joe can find a way to impact a game in the wet the same way Buddy and Tippet did last night. I don't expect him to take 15 marks and kick 6.

I expect that in the wet Stanton will be able to find some footy and use it with a degree of competence, I don't expect him to go head to head inside with Josh Kennedy.

So having adjusted expectations given the conditions, you can then assess performance relative to those expectations - and he was nowhere near it.

I'm not denying he wasn't up to his usual output. Just disappointed in posters (not just you) calling for heads to roll on the back of one performance

Have never called for his head, been very clear I'm assessing his performance in isolation.

Two different issues - (1) how was he last night? And (2), does this mean anything in the broad context of his place in the team? I have only touched on issue 1 because I don't understand the idea there are excuses for for what he served up.

Smart enough to leave issue 2 well alone in this forum....

His first possession was a rushed kick bombing it long without looking up and his night continued on from that. Not going to call for him to be dropped on one single game, but hope he plays a lot better next week. And I've been a fan of his over the years.
