Best game in years. Finally he consolidated his hard running with smarter ground positioning & used the ball to our advantage almost every time. He was actually damaging.

If he plays to that level we become a much better side, but it needs to be consistent. Could murder Carlton this Sat with same output

Pleased for him.

At the end of the day I'd rather see the bloke be good rather than rubbish, but I am one who is not blinded by his failings as a lot of you are. He wouldn't have even started in today's team on last week's showing at probably any other club other than Essendon. Pleased he put it together today.
Dropping a senior player after one bad performance in the first game of the season after poor preparation? Hmmmm... I find that a little harsh, maybe a touch knee-jerk, with a dash of i-just-don't-like-stanton.

this is NOT based on one game. It goes wa-a-y back into last year. Anyhow, if he's in the team (and he always is, regardless of form) I'd rather see him kick arse. He was great last game.

I'm his biggest critic. he is like Melksham, does so much stupid stuff turnovers... etc

but then he smothers a kick like he did against Hawks and saves the game.....how can you hate the bloke or call for his head.....

Can never fault his endeavour. He's a mostly dumb footballer but he gives 100%.

Miles better than against Sydney. Completely turned it around. If he plays like that there is no question about him not being in our best 22. Honestly as much as people complain about the Stanton bashing when he plays well he gets plenty of credit. He just needs to play well consistently this year and the fans will be totally behind him.

Pardon the intrusion, but has Stanton's role changed this year?
With Zac Merrett and others thriving and demanding more midfield time, Stanton seemed to spend time behind the ball last week.
Is this normal now? Is he being turned into a defender? If so, will it continue or is it just a one-off? I suspect his disposal numbers may stay down if this continues.

Cheers for any input.

Last year he played as a HFF/Wing this year wing/HBF. Hes still best in that traditional wing role where he runs from the start to the end of the game end to end. I just think hes better behind the ball, hes not the best 1 on 1 player so having someone playing close attention to him if hes playing a half forward role doesnt suit him.

watched the replay and he was playing exactly the role we hoped for. Linked up and hurt the opposition with his run. No concerns about his pace in this midfield and his disposal was solid. Things are coming out milhouse.

Uh isn't Mark Fine the guy responsible for several radios being destroyed in the Harlequin household?
him among others

I figure though Mark Fine has his own cross to bear as he supports a club where Dwarves get burnt, players take naked photos of each other dare I continue

Listened to the two Stanton interviews on SEN and here are some comments I've noted down. Also, I love Stanton but **** me he is boring to listen too. Speaks in cliches constantly and has a dreary monotonous voice.

  • A bigger focus was placed on bringing in mature aged recruits, i.e. Giles, Cooney and Gwilt as a means of addressing second half fades. The likes of Merrett and Nob aren't perhaps able to play a full season at a high standard.
  • Different players prepare differently for the home and away season. In regards to the no practice game issue, Stanton said he feels that one game at least is required to get match hardened for the start of the season.
  • Gleeson is playing ahead of Dempsey as Dempsey has had an interrupted pre-season. Marty is also slightly more flexible around the ground.
  • Stanton played a different role in the Sydney game. Coaches felt they were down one man in defense so he played hbf and back pocket for most of the game. In the same game, Cooney was actually not 100% so he was limited to only playing up forward. (He kind of danced around the question about why he struggled to influence the game in the second half).
  • Distance covered by players are tracked meticulously. Pears was limited to 9 km in the VFL game. If you fail to accumulate the necessary distance the sports scientists feel you need to be game ready, you make the meters up during training and even after games. Stanton averages 15 or so kilometers a game these days with his highest being around 18 km.
  • The position of a winger still exists but the player is more of an additional rover. Players still need to "own" their wing and are noted on how well they defend their side of the ground and how many times the ball is leaked out in their wing of the ground.
  • Rotations do affect individual match ups. You can have multiple opponents in the space of 5 minutes but at the reset of play through a ball up, players are expected to attend to their individual match up.
  • Dyson is a standout as a leader. Very confident without being arrogant. Probably the Watson replacement in Stanton's eyes. Hooker also growing really well with his leadership skills.
  • Stanton sees Hurley as a natural defender rather than a forward. Kept an eye on him as he went to the same high school and both played for the Northern Knights. Carlisle's effort is still good up forward.
  • Lloyd's role coaches the forwards on predominantly set shots but does a little work as well with the forwards in regards to their leading patterns.
