Surely the best option here is to delist and pay out his contract. We have plenty of cap space so the list spot is far more valuable.
This has been the obvious best move all year, he's clearly cooked. Do you think the club has it in them to make that call though? Its the same as the Heppell. Is the club strong enough to hold firm on 1 year at modest money? I dont think so unfortunately

Does opening up another list spot this year achieve anything? Given the number of actual OOC players already slated for retirement/delisting/trading he'd probably end with his spot filled from the dregs at the back end of the draft.

Have a look at what we've got in the ssp and msd. List spots are gold.

Might be the difference between keeping menzie or not. We already added 2 in the pre season and 2 mid season. Potentially 4 draft picks and maybe 1 or 2 players in a trade. The more list spots the better. Always good to a have a spare spot over preseason for a train on player aswell.

Could also retire early just before the MSD.

Devon Smith shouldn’t be on an AFL field again. Whoever we take from the dregs may be awful or may be fit to be on an AFL field at some point. I’d rather a flyer at an unknown quantity than wasting time with a known clogger.

Doubt we’ll see him play at AFL level again, just physically not up to it. His knee is ****ed. Thing is, we knew that when we brought him in - and played him through the midfield anyway.

Don’t get it.

For one glorious year, however, he was a tackling machine.

Does the club reach a financial agreement with Smith in situations like this?
Or does Smith just forgo his last year salary?

Dare say it was a case of the club having the extra salary room to use, having no intention of playing Dev much next year and offering him to retire 'on his own terms' and be paid in full.
