AFL Player 5: Elijah Tsatas

Was nowhere near getting a possession in the first 3 centre bounces he attended. Did okay in the third quarter finding some open space and getting a few touches. More than half his possessions where back half pushing back.
Did he start on the ground? I hate Tsatas just as much as the next person, but it can be very hard to insert yourself into a game after spectating for a long time. That could explain his hesitancy early, others already have the speed of the game down pat.

After that, sure, pure softness but we know this.

‘Hate’ is a very strong word. It carries malevolent energy Hank.

Got taught a lesson in terms of ball hunting. Everytime he lined up on Pendlebury he would shoot into the contest while Pendles sat on the outside and waited for the ball to come out.

Alot of our mids/flanks get too easily drawn to the contest instead of maintaining their width whereas pendles is rock solid in his positioning (dermie and hird showed footage during week of how his positioning is one of the key reasons why they deny most teams the corridor).
We've looked poor this year whenever our mids get smashed at the coalface because of the knock off effect of drawing in more guys to the contest which then leads to lots of free opposition players on the outside, which then leads to our defenders being under siege one out.
Our defenders are copping a baking atm but the issue stemmed from parish reverting back to early season form plus scott inexplicably reducing tstatas' time on ground and being too slow to react to steene dominating wright at the centre bounce.
The last point was really disappointing from a coaching perspective, steene did the same to pittonet in q4 last week so we should have been ready but it took all of q3 and a bit of q4 before we made sure blakiston matched up against steene at the centre. Blaki doesnt have many weapons but he at least can match a ruckman who has a huge vertical leap.

I think it takes a degree of maturity and football smarts to hold your position and not just dive into the pack chasing the ball, and… well

The Dees had something similar about trusting the tackler. Instead of everyone within cooee of the tackler jumping in to wrap someone up they’d stay back to pounce on the ball if it came lose. It probably helped that they had guys like Petracca, Oliver and Viney who are more than capable of making a tackle stick vs our weedy, gunshy bunch

Maturity and just getting games under the belt as a combination. The more games you have played as a group together the more you know to trust player x to get the job done.
Its similar in Union/League in regards to maintaining your defensive line, young backline combos generally give up more clean breaks because the outside defender will get drawn in to assist with a tackle instead of maintaining their width because they dont trust their teammate to make the tackle.

I mentioned something similar to this in a game day thread a few weeks back.
It also happens when teams are running loose & our players leave their man, creating the easy option for the opponent with the ball.

Dyson Sharp already gets this. Was immediately noticeable - goes or stays at right time.
