I saw that segment too. I found that quite extraordinary that they would be pre determining what to look out for. There was a segment on umpiring on last Wednesday’s AFL360 with Horse and Simpson (the only segment I watch nowadays). They’d each spent considerable time during the preceding week observing umpiring activities. For the work they’d done, it deserved more than a ten minute segment on a midweek show.
One thing they talked about (which surprised/ shocked me but didn’t seem to raise the ire of two long time coaches) was how the umpires prepare for a match, focusing on the individual players participating and likely match ups that they (the umpires) will need to keep an eye on, anticipating where there might be scragging etc). And they think about the game styles of each team, and what that might mean for rule infringements. Naive me had hoped (expected) that the umpires just call what they see, but clearly that’s not the case. They prime themselves to see some infringements more than others.
I reckon they've been pretty unlucky much of the year. Any team that can play with the sort of pressure they applied yesterday is set up nicely.Saints had a shitload of under 24 players they should be decent next season if they can get King fit
In the lead up to Hayward's 3rd goal? Agreed it was a fantastic contest win.It would seem so. Buller has been very good since he came in. He's a clever player. Makes good decisions. He competes, every time and if he competes he gives you a chance. That cvontest on the wing in the last was incredibly clever. He left Camaniti for dead. He bodied him, then slipped out the back and got the ball on. Do you know all the time he was directing traffic. Great play. Very clever. A REAL Forward.

Campbell also summed up the situation beautifully waiting for Wilbur to get into just the right spot and delivered a perfect pass.

If we played with the desperation from the start we improve our %If we played with the desperation of the last quarter more often this year, even with injuries we would be in the 8 right now

They were like us the last few weeks , that gutsy loss to Footscray cost us

This makes sense as to why we seem (and seemed) to give a lot of free kicks to opposition tall forwards.
Umps carrying in the bias that our usual undersized KPD’s (Rampe comes to mind as an example) would need to interfere with the bigger power forwards (eg - Charlie Dixon) to match them. Hence over the years we seem to concede a lot of D50 free kicks.
I actually don’t think them doing this analysis prior to a game is a good thing for a fair and unbiased call!
It should just be made on merits, if it’s there pay it, preferrably pay less and only the obvious.
Also there is a complete lack of “feel” for the game these days, which is probably accentuated with extra umpires, adding additional interpretations. They have a tough job without doubt, I am hoping the new appointments to AFL help sort through this mess. Probs the number 1 issue in footy at present, the state of umpiring.
People called Lloyd washed but he had 94% game time playing wing
Hes still an endurance machine and runs into the right spots for a mark
I've been concerned about this systemic trend for a long time. It's hard to say it's really a code anymore because it changes from one minute to the next. It’s a big concern because when literally no-one knows WTF is against the rules and what’s not, there is massive potential there for match fixing.
Not saying there is corruption of umps, I hasten to add, but we’ve seen in the political arena how quickly disinformation leads to erosion of accountability.
Hot take
Captains in AFL mean sweet FA.
Moreso than nearly any other sport I can think of.
He’s gaining so much confidence by letting him stay in the side. His goalkicking improved. Plenty of upside with BullerBuller's grappling with Wilkie(?) inside 50 in the dying stages to chew off about 10 seconds and not give away a free was soooo good.

I actually thought Gus had been subbed off when I saw him go off in Q3 holding a shoulder & Bice appeared. The fact he was the one who stayed on the field and was not subbed between him and Francis was very telling at the end of the day.
Agreed. Not quite first-picked yet, but has bought himself about 3 matchesHe’s gaining so much confidence by letting him stay in the side. His goalkicking improved. Plenty of upside with Buller
Nup, it was the Essendon loss. That bloody abomination against the Judas army is what really killed our season.
I think he has upside, could see it in VFL, but also being one of 2 fit key forwards will hopefully help if he has a poor game (which others get away with all the time).Agreed. Not quite first-picked yet, but has bought himself about 3 matches
About right. My favourite umpire moment was I think in Q3 when a Saint sent an absolute bullet pass from the left wing into the centre. An umpire, just loitering in the corridor, was forced to fall on his face to avoid having his head removed. Sheer delight. I think the ones driving most supporters mad are the ruck "infringements". Marshall and Grundy both wanted zero separation and the ump kept warning Marshall to keep the metre (Grundy got there first) then did nothing when he didn't. Who knows what half the "infringements" are for.Well done on the win swans fans.
Hayward was epic in the last qtr and threading that goal from the boundary was brilliant.
Grundy absolutely dominated in the ruck and the palm down to Gulden in the last was just poetry in motion.
Interesting reading through your thread about your thoughts on the umpires.
When I was watching the game in the heat of the moment with my saints glasses on I thought we was extremely hard done by especially Caminiti on Buller in the 1st when they was grappling each other and holding each other just let them play on in that situation.
Grundy was given a couple of interesting free kicks and holding the ball was an absolute lottery.
On reflection after I can see the game logically Wilkie was 100% holding the ball in the last qtr and you should have been given a free kick straight in front and the 50 metre penalty was pretty dodgy.
I understand this is a swans forum and the game is watched through a swans lens but trust me the umpiring was complete rubbish both ways.
The worst umpired game I’ve seen this season.
All the best with the rest of the year hope you don’t mind the intrusion.

It's the essendon loss for me. The GC one we should never have lost either after practically having the game wrapped up in the 2nd qtr. Add the undeserved dogs loss. The combination of those 3 has killed off our season.Dunno the loss to Port looks just as horrid, least Adelaide are a good side
The Power and Lions loss also hurts. Should have won both of the gamesIt's the essendon loss for me. The GC one we should never have lost either after practically having the game wrapped up in the 2nd qtr. Add the undeserved dogs loss. The combination of those 3 has killed off our season.
If we had managed those three we'd be sitting equal 4th which would've been an exceptional effort given our injuries.
