It's the essendon loss for me. The GC one we should never have lost either after practically having the game wrapped up in the 2nd qtr. Add the undeserved dogs loss. The combination of those 3 has killed off our season.
If we had managed those three we'd be sitting equal 4th which would've been an exceptional effort given our injuries.
I think we can all agree it was over-umpired. The most obscure "blocking" free was the one against Mills when the Saints player was between him and the ball (Melican coming over the top to spoil).I might be wrong, but my interpretation of both frees against Caminiti was that they were for shepherding rather than just holding. In each case, Caminiti had his back to play and was facing his opponent, and prevented the Swans player (one time Buller, can’t recall who the Swan in the second contest was) from reaching the contest while making no attempt to contest the ball himself.
I know frees in those kinds of contests are as frustrating as ruck contest frees because they are applied so inconsistently. Commentators don't help, Especially when they laud a player for a great block that enables a team mate to take a mark, but I think having your back to play and not trying to contest are two triggers for the umps.
I can’t agree it was the worst umpires game all year. Seemed pretty standard to me. Some mistakes were made for/against both teams but that’s par for the course.
He'll cop a fine. When Grundy got caught trying to run around the saints ruck and got caught HTB, apparently Heeney copped someone high with a jumper punch
Nup, it was the Essendon loss.

For me it's (any or all) of the first Port game, the Essendon game and the Dogs game. They all have something in common - woeful set shot conversion. Admittedly against the Dogs we kicked a lot of arsey goals - but so did they. But we missed so many straight forward set shots. And though we were poor in patches against both Port (first time) and Essendon, we did enough in the final quarters to win those game had we had even passable set shot conversion. The Power and Lions loss also hurts. Should have won both of the games

Against Port - 27 scores to 20. We lost by 8 points.
Against Essendon - 23 scores to 16. We lost by 8 points.
Against the Bulldogs - 26 scores to 25. We lost by 9 points. Clearly this one is a little greyer re whether we "should" have won. But it's the most recent, and the memory of so many really straightforward set shots missed is still too fresh.
Some were a bit down on Gulden's performance but watching it back, he still does a lot of the grunt work. A couple of tough marks going back with the flight in our D50, some strong tackles, especially in the first quarter to set the tone.
Numbers weren't through the roof but he's always involved.
Convert those and we are only sitting outside the top 4 on % with a soft draw home.
Next season, a few less injuries, a better set up up forward (McDonald and maybe Juh?) really feel like we can do some damage.

Tmac thing worries me tbh for his long term future
I'm feeling sad that it looks like we've wasted a fair bit of Hamling and Buller's time with the club by not playing them when we could/should have. After just his second proper game Buller looks to have a better skill set than McLean (of whom I'm a fan) and equal to Amartey. Should definitely get another year. I had lent towards giving Francis another year but Hamling is much sounder in defence and better backup or first choice so if his body is good I'd go again there too unless somehow we catch a big fish.Convert those and we are only sitting outside the top 4 on % with a soft draw home.

On the JUH train as well![]()
One of the in the know contacts on this board hasn't been wrong before (Struck true on Papley, Warner, McDonald and Gulden contracts).
I'm choosing to trust him on it

Buller rucks in the VFL every week, so I'm not sure it's because of injury concern. In seniors, it'd be because we see McLean as the regular backup.I saw quite a bit of Buller at Claremont.
I don’t think he’ll ever be a dominant forward at AFL level, but he does have pretty good ruck skills.
We’re not employing him as a ruck/fwd, which I assume is because of the back injury concern.
But IF Ladhams and Green aren’t the answer post-Grundy, I do wonder if Buller mightn’t be a reasonable option in the ruck - at least as the chop-out option.
Interesting to see if he’s still on the list next year.
Some of Mills disposal and decision-making has been pitiful the last couple of weeks, and I'm a long term Mills supporter.Zero issue with Gulden since his return tbh even going at 80% he is still critical to us.
Mills however i have a few more concerns about
I confess I didn't really notice Windhager (though he racked up disposals); Steele OTOH I thought was outstanding.Coaches votes
