Port Adelaide
I've only watched a handful of Port Adelaide games this season, and what i've seen in almost every game is the same problems. Here are my thoughts.

1) At any stoppage, the opposition simply handball out the back of the pack, where they have 2-4 free players, who handball between each other and kick it clear with ease. Surely someone on the coaching staff has picked up how often it happens. If we keep losing the ball out the back of the pack, make sure those players are marked up. I'm not talking about centre bounces, but any other stoppage, it's always the same story.

2) The ease with which opposition players run through the middle of the ground and into the forward 50. As soon as we lose the ball, our players immediately begin sprinting back to get numbers into the defensive 50. Nobody ever tries to just try win the ball back immediately. We are always at least one, if not more, players down. The amount of times opponents walk into our 50 with nobody near them is sickening. There's always one of our defenders who then leaves their man, runs at the player, gets handballed over the top for an easy goal. Happens FAR too often. Instead of sprinting back to position when we lose the ball, how about the players try and get into smart positions and put pressure on the man right away? We do it every now and then for small periods and it works well.

3) Our stupidity at marking contests. We seem to lose pack marking contests all the time. Two on two, both our tall and small go up for the ball, ball hits the deck, leaving their small waiting and easily running off. One example yesterday was Cassisi and Cornes contesting the same high ball against two Melbourne blokes. The Melbourne player stayed down, and went off with the ball. Against the Eagles, the amount of times all our defenders jumped for the same ball, leaving the likes of Le Cras and Nicoski to crumb without pressure was appalling.

4) Our players tackle like 5 year old school girls. The ease at which teams shrug our tackles, or even sidestep our players is embarrassing. Our players are like training cones sometimes, or when they do get a tackle in, the opponents are able to shrug it off. Yes, we have some good tacklers, but there is still LOTS of room for improvement.

5) We have no forward structure. Infact, often we have no forwards. What I fail to understand, is how we are always undermanned in defence and midfield, and still only be playing two men up forward. So many times it feels like we are playing with 3-4 players less than the opponents. Our players are clearly getting 'lost' moving between thirds.

Plus we are missing key pieces to our setups:

FB: Pittard Carlile Stewart
HB: Surjan Trengove Chaplin

C: Pearce Cassisi Boak

HF: Weshoff Schulz Motlop
FF: Hitchcock Butcher Gray

R: Lobbe, Hartlett, Thomas

Int: Jacobs, O'Shea, Salopek, Newton

Should be our starting 22 with:
Hitchcock interchangeable with Phillips

That's a huge gaping ****ing hole in the team defence.

Each week I tend to notice one pattern more than others. This week it was number 2. Way too many times Melbourne were able to waltz the ball forward with minimal pressure. It was almost as if I could see a arrogant smile on their faces as they thought "how easy is this?" I can't remember the last time we were able to make it hard for decent opposition to score for a sustained period.

Yeah, agree.

Other times it's our inability to create constructive centre-square clearances or for our forwards to capitalise on rushed forward 50 entries from a stoppage, by at least keeping it locked in there.

The other huge issue against Melbourne, which was possibly a result of the lack of centre-field pressure, was that our defenders seemed to be miles off their opponents.

Yeah, agree.

I don't get it. When we had the ball it seemed so bloody hard to get goals (poor disposal aside)

I can only think of two causes. Fitness or laziness. Yet no one from the club mentions these two reasons

every single week the same line is said around other lines - "the turnovers out of defense killed us". but we don't actually address that or anything else, we're just told why we lost from the coach (as if we didn't know already).

good point with our defense. pettigrew replacing paul stewart and ditching pittard and jacobs back there was a bold move. jacobs should be a midfielder anyway. why can't surj play that role?

6. There is always one opposition player who early on gets 6 free possessions and we ask "who is on.............." (insert any player, this week Sylvia)
And for the entire game they are permitted to run around freely without a man

7. Each oppoistion team has 1 bald player who gets the ball uncontested in the centre, and then bobs up to take an uncontested mark 35 from goal. The bald men are our menace

Incidentally, 1-5 define the 2007 GF

You can add 8. to that- We miss critical set shots for goal.
9. Our defenders do not wear long enough sprigs and 3 goals per game are conceded when their man turns under them.

1-5 are good

The tackling one- yeah, we slap their arms, is all we do.
Pearce won't even tackle- he "corralls"

or atleast.. "where's lower?"

how you guys let him go i will never know, good for us, but gee, you guys could use him right now

ask Choco why he didnt play him, despite good SANFL form?

Coaches are like that - have a 'set against' or 'love for' particular players.

This year we are asking Primus why Surjan isnt being played now - keep an eye out - he's likely heded your way?

Jack Cahill didnt like Peter Burgoyne - choco played him and he went ok?

What number are we up to? This one got me shouting at the TV. Our players LOVE not staying on their feet after a contest. They look like they're having too much fun.

yeah, every club has them... the one that still gets me is that drum didnt like james clement :confused:..... goes to collingwood and ends up a dual AA with a couple of B&F's to boot.

surjan hey? i know he hated the dockers for some reason, so maybe heading to the westcoast flogs.

Lower was no good here.

Well, he was ok, but Farmer, Banner, Thomson ok. i.e. Good SANFL player, not an AFL player

When he was delisted he went back to the SANFL and worked on his game and got picked up again...

Watch Surjan play on Saturday he was very very good, cant understand why he can't get a game with the power. He pulls out of nothing, this is what the power is missing, a hard nut and his leadership.

Why would Surjan want to stay at Port

The big 3 for me are:

1. Skills/Talent - sadly lacking in every area of the field. It's the biggest issue.
2. Fitness/Spread - whether it's mental or physical - we can't stick with teams.
3. Hardness - we have a lot of young players that get brushed aside, and several of our senior players are soft (Chaplin, Carlile, Pearce, Westhoff).

The structure/balance/coaching issues would mostly take care of themselves if we were fit and talented.

Whilst I agree that Lower has played a couple of good games this season, if you guys didn't have so many injuries there is no way he would be getting a game

Given that you have made 57 post on Bigfooty and every single one is about Jacob Surjan I am guessing you are either a very good mate or related.

Is he going?

To WA or GWS?

What is the story between Surjan and Primus? What has he been told to work on this year?
