Re: 5-6 years time, Grand final????

Spot on.

If and when a seasoned ruckman comes on to the market we sould be in a good position to trade one of our young back flank/midfield types (ie Cheeney, Straus, Blease, etc) that we have on our list, in the same way Geelong traded hard for Ottens.

Blease and Strauss were our second and third picks. Just because they haven't played yet doesn't make them trade bait. If Bennell was picked so far after them, imagine how good these guys can be.

Forget including both Scully and Butcher in the side..

Its not happening, we were competitive with Geelong up
until half time - so theres at least 4-5 wins this yr, just on
that form alone..

Freo, Richmond - and especially North Melbourne arent
travelling all that well atm, so Im tipping we win around 5 games..

In saying that, Ive supported Melbourne for the past 20 odd years,
and I know what Id be doing if I were in charge of the club atm, Id
be suring up future success, if planned right - a Melbourne Dynasty
isnt out of the realms.
the coaching panel will be givin the arse if they win 5 games, they arent that stupid

Agreed. I hope they all dominate. They were just the names that came into my head. We seem to be building a lot of the same smaller skilled  running types, which is absolutly what we need.

But hopefully we find ourselves in a similar position to Geelong. They’ve managed to trade Prismal and Moloney both very talented young blokes for ready made players in positions they struggled.

To win in 5 years we would need Messen and/or Spencer to develop A LOT and IF we got P1&2 this year trade P2 to Freo for Pav or hope Butcher comes on quick. ‘The Messiah’ is going to be a gun, but could use an experienced bloke to take the best defender whislt he establishes himself, Pav would be very nice.

Circa Lynch & Brown during the Brisbane years. I still get a warm fuzzy feeling remembering back to the 2003(?) GF and them belting the shit out of the scum.

So you = everyone?

My comment was justified, what person in their right mind would sack a coaching panel for not tanking?

Your comment was idiotic.
listen dezzo!!!!!!!!! it was a throw away comment, of course they're not gonna get the arse, but the coach's know the situation the MFC are in. they arent gonna risk win # 5 just so the fans can sing the ****ing theme song in the shower. glad your not the coach of the ****ing club otherwise we'd be getting further and further in the shit

and we're glad you're not the coach so we can turn up to a game and actually see the club we support try

seriously do you read what you post?
not going to RISK win five, since when was winning games a risk. you know what is a risk though, tanking. if it were ever proven that a clubbed tanked to receive priority draft picks they afl would hammer them. it's match fixing, there is no other way to describe it, and that has massive penalties. from loss of draft picks (you think Carlton got it rough for salary cap breaches?), massive fines, loss of premiership points in following seasons, they could probably remove the player we took with our priority pick from our list. Hell the afl could even suspend our license (it's happened in other leagues)

and you think winning 5 games this year will put our club in the shit?

bla bla bla bla booooooring
you really dont know watt goes on in football these days with clubs "managing their lists" do u. your either very blind or very naive.
example straight off the top of my head: demons vs eagles last year at the G. that was the eagles "managing" to secure pick 18
for **** sakes its a throw away line you tool:eek:.
and by the way, winning 5 games certainly wont help

who cares if it doesn't help we'll still pick up a pretty good player. Our team we have at the moment will develop, strive and gain confidence off wins so the more wins the better. I think that it is good to get the priority picks but not by tanking. u need to earn it sought of but no throw away games and get called a tanking team. and it isn't just fans who want us to win more games, our coach has said numerous times we will try and win as many games as possible. it shows improvement if we win games and are more competetive, where as tanking shows we are cheats and a morally crap club.

pettard. your obviously new to this game and havn't yet realised watt the afl are planning to do in the next 2-3 years. Introduce 2 new teams where by the draft of new players will be ****ed. wouldn't u like to have the 1st 2 choices in a very shallow draft this year and then have to wait for a very long time before the teams are all on equal pegging again well as close to equal as can be. 14 other clubs would like to be in our position, and i believe i havnt used the word tank once on this thread.
and bailey hasn't said he wants to win games i believe in his words he wants the team to be "competative"

1983 - 8th position 9 wins
1984 - 9th position 9 wins
1985 - 11th position 6 wins
1986 - 11th position 7 wins
1987 - 5th postion 12 wins FINALS YESSSS
so i ask u. where was this famous "winning culture" that progressed melbourne into the finals after 24 years of playing pure shit football?????

I see where coming from, every team needs quality talent. And obviously with the name "picks 1 & 2" i can see where your heart lies. But just because a couple of talent scouts say a youngster is the best out there, doesn't make him a star. Development of a player is more important than "list managing" (tanking). I think we should just focus on the youngsters we have now, not 2 kids still playing junior footy. And also buddy maybe think about your "throw away lines" a little bit more carefully.:thumbsu:

most football critics attribute Melbournes rise in 87 to the work of Barrassi and the development of players under him as coach in the early 80's. i can guarantee you it wasn't draft picks that got us up the ladder

Comparing the 80s to the modern day is comparing chalk and cheese. It is just a stupid argument that has derailed the thread considering we are a long way from having a choice about "tanking."

Okay i haven't posted on this debate about tanking for draft picks, however my heart definitely lies with winning as many games as possible to build a winning culture at melbourne.

The idea that we will "sure up" our future by getting scully and butcher is not the right idea, sure youl get 'talented' players but how do we know they will be quality players because after all they are still only 18 years old.

Building a winning culture is far more IMO, just look at carltank. They ooze quality in Gibbs, Judd, Murphy, Kreuzer (all draft picks from tanking), yet how come this year we notice they never win the close games, and subsequently are 3 - 4? They lost to essendon and hawthorn by less than a kick and lost to freo last night by 7 points.

I feel that is because they have built a losing culture, they sometimes forget how to grind out victories in those close games. Sure the enicement of picks 1 & 2 look tempting, but going out with the mentality of losing games is very detrimental to the future of the melbourne football club.

Your username says it all about high draft picks!

Carlton will go bananas in the next couple of years but it'll be dirty. Would much rather be an Essendon who didn't sell their soul to get good kids.

oh shit sorry fairtex thanks so much for the warning. i sure will next time. thanks for saving my arse. legend

I'm more concerned about getting the most out of the players we DO have rather than musing about players we might get and who MIGHT be good in the future. Development of the players we actually have now is far more important.

Makes you want to rip your hair out when great players we do have get injured for long periods, come back only to get injured again, and AGAIN.

And anyway, we've arguably already GOT two future KPP forwards at least. As long as they don't get stuck in this revolving door of injuries as well

in 1981 they won 1 game omit. thats really good development of players by barass

picks1and2 i guess you would also like us to merge with the roos and get some of their quality young players, and while were there we may as well tank for the next 4 years cause at the moment our team is looking like a hopeless team that is not ever going to be anywhere near the finals in 5 or 10 years. Get a life!!!!! Melbourne has a very good bunch of young kids, we have the youngest list in the comp. when u look into our depth we have FWDs in Watts, Miller, Jurrah, Bate, Newton, Aussie, Jetta, Davey. There not all going to be superstars that kick toons of goals but look at saints and cats they don't have many of main goal kickers in their teams. MIDs we have Jones, Morton, McLean, Petterd, Moloney, Blease, Grimes, Green, Davey. They will all continue to develop into very good midfielders, they are very tough players despite being so young. BACKS at the moment our oldest defender in the team at present is 25, yet we are not being totally smashed. We have Warnock, Rivers, Martin, Garland, Frawley, Grimes, Petterd, Cheney, McNamara, Bell. They will all continue to improve and will thrive off narrow losses and wins. when they play on players like roughead, franklin, brown, riewoldt and they don't give away too many goals they will gain confidence for beating a quality fwd in the comp. RUCKS our ruck stock at the moment is not all too well but once again look at saints and cats. there rucks at present are onlny average ruckman but the team still wins. Our rucks will continue to improve with meesenand spencer hopefully the improving 2 to be our 2 ruckman. Yes draft picks do help speed it up but you can still get some quality players ie. hird, grant, bruce, cox, sewell, mcdonald, kirk whereever they are in the draft

hey listen rick, u dont need to lecture me on our players!! i know there is some great talent in there. try adding scully and butcher in there and it looks even better. lets face they may be duds, but we're a very young team now and they could all turn out like duds. Who knows
