I see Stanton run alot, but he doesn't run hard when it counts.

For him its just rack up the touches and be the man behind play. I've never seen him actually get down on his knee's and try to attack the ball, and have never seen him attack his opponent when they have possession of the ball.

Thats why Monfries is more deservent of that number 5, but he has his own number that he's gonna make famous by himself. I see Angus as a really good in and under player that won't even flinch when it comes to getting down and dirty, but thats just my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

I like Stanton, but there was one contest in the third when Stanton appeared to pull out of a contest, but I will add there were several times when Carlton players took marks with two or more bomber players standing around and non of them getting a fit near the ball.

____ the number 5. Its got nothing to do with Hird anymore. Stanton is number 5 so we shouldn't compare him to anyone. His performances have been down from last year, but if he is going to be the gun we predicted he would be he has to learn how to play his way into form. Dropping him would do nothing but shoot his confidence even more.

One thing that irked me about Stanton yesterday was early in the first quarter when Davey was outside 50, Stanton called for the handball only to shank the kick and cause a turn over.
It wasn't bad thinink actually, the execution was just horrible. Davey is one of the worst set shots we have and would've struggled for distance and Stanton can easily kick the ball 55m.
But he should start learning how to win his own ball, i dont mean Jobe or McVeigh style but he needs to commit more to some contests at least. And to NEVER to what he did with the Fev incident again (getting out of the way)

I've only been saying this since I've been on BF!

Stanton is NOT an elite midfielder and NEVER will be.

I'm going on record to say he's simply not good enough for what we are looking for. I'm not expecting a Chris Judd but I wouldn't mind a Sam Mitchell and he puts his body on the line every week! :thumbsu:

It was Hird's idea to give Stanton the no. 5, possibly the only mistake Sir James has made in his life! :D

Can't you people understand?????

It's not about his ability, or his stats or the number 5 or anything like that...

It's the fact that for three consecutive weeks of elite football he has not respected his other teammates by avoiding doing the team things. For those of you out there saying that being an outside receiver is team instructions, fair enough, but surely Knights doesn;t tell him to purposely avoid a vital contest where he had to go, surely????

And for that muppet who said he was playing like Robert Harvey, have a look at the tapes mate, when Harvey had to put hisbody on he line he did, that's the difference.

Although Monfries didn't have a lot of it, every contest that he went to he made something happen with courage.

just wish that we could infuse Stanton's running and ball-getting ability with Angus' courage and skills

I agree about Monfries, I gave him wraps for having star qualities today... I got shot down. Probably the same guy who thinks Stanton is a star!

I'm disappointed he doesn't get a more senior role, particularly in the middle, I think he can turn into a quality in-and-under type only he has exceptional finishing qualities....... unlike the current #5!

Kudos, I think this is the first thing I have agreed with you about :D. Monfries last night won 3 free kicks for being the first one to the ball, scored a few goals when needed and showed alot of leadership qualities.

Stants will come good never reach Judd heights but would be happy if he had a Matthew Knights/Nathan Burke type career.

Monfries started well but in the end played an ok game at best. Kicked some nice goals but needs to lift if he wants to find himself in the team. Played forward virtually all night, think Knight's must test him by putting him on the ball.

... i agreed with you about Pears as well! :thumbsu:

I think the ledger now sits at 1 disagreement to 2 agreements! :D

That's the ticket, IMO he's an onballer... and one that is only a tick away from exploding! Sheedy played him as a forward, if we're to best utilise his skills he needs to be in the game and that's on the pill! ;)

... Stanton is a tick away from imploding! :D

You can't take the number 5 off Stanton's back. Too many people are riding on it...

Seriously, the guy is having a bad form patch. 21, massive weight of expectation, servicable against Carlton, high posession winner (if inefficient) in a game we got flogged in the week before. He's not Jimmy and not trying to be, so stop expecting him to be.

Too many people missing the point. If he was simply out of form and struggling to adapt to the tag he is getting this year then it is a worry but something you would expect him to work through.
The concern is the complete lack of respect he shows his team mates and the jumper by side stepping a contest. On saturday night he looked over his shoulder and stepped out of the way and let Fev come through and take an easy mark. If it is good enough for a young bloke like Dempsey to stand in the path of Riewodlt in the NAB Cup game and then in front of Thompson a couple of times against North then it is dam well good enough for Stants to do the same thing the one time he had to on saturday night. Im not suggesting he go and and crash blokes all night. That is not his go. An outside player is what he is but there are no excuse's for stepping out of the way during a game and letting a team mate down when you simply had to stay in the space and make a contest.
If players start dodging the contact then we start becoming the marsh mellow side again that no one has any respect for.
Its not about expecting him to be as good as Hird. It is about him having some respect for the jumper and puting his body on the line when it is his turn.

I didn't see the incident you mentioned but it doesn't sound good at all. Was Stanton facing Fev or back turned?
He was back-turned but it was an ugly sight. It was in the third quarter and the ball came into the carlton 50, if Stanton held his line he would've bought the ball to ground (at least made a contest) but he saw Fev coming so he side-stepped out of the way so he didn't get hurt. As a result, Fev took the mark and goaled. In such a crucial time in the game, he didnt show any heart

Dissapointing... worst news is it cant be blamed on form .

I've notice Pendlebury who was also earmarked for a big year has had a bad start to the season, could be added pressure weighing down on their shoulders.

It was Hird's idea to give the number to someone and not retire it.
He never said who it should go to.

Hird's opinion and I agree, was that it was just a number.

22 blokes all wear the same jumper, number is insignificant.

I'd drop him, it worked for Luke Power. He was dropped for the same reasons a few years ago and came back a much better player for it.

The only issue is that Houli looks like he's injured and will probably miss, Nash was disgusting and Jetta is also out. NLM and Welsh to come back but neither will run through the middle (Welsh might).

He might get a game on default, but he should be put on notice.

Apart from a few poor kicks here and there - how was Nash disgusting?

Stanton is out of forma nd needs to lift - the marking contest had me fuming at the time - but I would hope the coach would put the onus back on to Stanton to lift and he is good enough to do that.

What is wrong with Houli?

He was led to the ball on EVERY occassion.
He refused to either play in front of or side by side his opponent.
He failed to provide a contest and his ball use (his strength) was appauling.

I'm a fan, but he was extremely poor on Saturday night.

I don't think he's playing that bad, but he has an underlying flaw in his game that needs to be rectified before it becomes habit. I'd like to see us make a stand.

I have no idea, but he looks to be carrying something.

Sadly yes, that was the incident I was referring to, he started heading backward towards the Goal square looked over his shoulder then stopped, the only possible excuse was he worried about giving away a free kick.

Had Stants attacked that contest he may have had the front position
