50 Years of the Saints - Countdown to NAB 1, 2017. (1 Day to go)
Round 14, 2016
Date: 25th June, 2016.
Location: Etihad Stadium
Crowd: 28,745
After beating the Western Bulldogs by a whopping 57 points, the Cats took on St.Kilda in tonight's Saturday night contest. The Saints had just come off the bye and were desperate for a win to keep their finals hopes alive, sitting in 12th with 5 wins and 7 losses. Geelong were on top of the ladder after 13 Rounds, and with a 10-3 record looked destined to play deep into September.
From the outset the Saints looked switched on, with their physical pressure game resulting in many Geelong turnovers, and at one stage the underdog Saints scooted away to a 5 goal lead early in the third term before the class of the Cats reeled St.Kilda back in before the end of the third, heading into the final term down by 11 points.
In a pulsating final quarter, it was the Saints who would hold on to defeat Geelong after being down by 9 points with only minutes left. It was touted by many as the upset of the 2016 season, and what better way to end the countdown with this classic!
